Default Jeep trailer Ozebay

Starting price of $450. Interesting to see how much this one goes for, as it is in pretty good nick, does not appear to have the back cut out of it.

Default trailer

He's blowing his own horn .... it needs a new floor ( you can see the buckled floor panel and rust holes ) and it isn't a straight forward restoration as he claims it would be.

The PMG ( post office ) here were still using them in the early 70's. Painted yellow , they fitted angled lids on them . I know one or two were quietly 'liberated' during the night from roadside PMG works .

The Aust. pattern version ,4 or 4A ? tended to bounce around the road a lot , very hard springs on them . The US version does ride softer .. and has a handbrake .

The tarp is an interesting part of the sale if it is actually ww2 original. From GMH factory photo's of #4 trailers, it appears that it might be original, but more shots of the tarp would be better! I dont think there would be too many floating around now a days!

Definitely a #4, but not sure if FMC or GMH. From what i have observed, the easiest way to tell the difference between the a GMH and FMC is the style of hook to hold the tarp on. I have only seen one other manufacturers trailer (an IHC #3) so i cant comment on them.

GMH has a pointy end/tip of the tie down.
FMC has a flatter squared off, pressed end tip of the tie down.

Also interesting are the original rims and i would even guess the original tyres.

Will be interesting to see what it brings.

Ian.

Ian,
thought you might drop by.
Seeing as the adv. does not have Jeep plastered all over it in the heading, it may escape the Too Much money In The Pockets jeep fraternity. Just hope no one is silly enough to post it on a forum anywhere, and it may go for a reasonable (read sane) price. The South Aussy guys don't seem to mind anyone (everyone?) coming over and helping themseves too all the bargains, I hear the welcome mat is always out, so you should be planning a little holiday in Barossa. (No bids yet).
Rich
(always happy to see jeep guys fighting over rusty bits, leaves all the good stuff for the rest of us)

Hi Ian, Mike and Richard,
It is a GM-H and you can tell by looking at the photo of the floor. The bottom corner pressings on the front and rear panel have rounded corners and FMC are square. If I don't make sense I can take some photo's tomorrow.
I think IH was the only other manufacture of type 4 trailers and there was not a 4a.
Mike is right , I highly recomend removing 4 leaf springs from each side and the fitting of shock aborbers and then wheels stay on the ground.
Ian I pick up a type 3A hopefully next weekend I will send you some photo's when I get it home.
Jeff

By the way that tarp looks original.
I have a tarp the was copied off an original and it has the same stiching and no eyelets in the corners.

Hi Richard,

Sorry for the slow reply!

You are right, it wasnt a half bad price for a trailer- particuarly on ebay! I know there are still good ones out there to be found though!

Cheers,
Ian.
