Hedgehogs
Today found on the beach a "Hedgehog" nearby the big dike
between Schoorl and Petten, located in the North of Holland. The name of the dike is "Hondsbossche Zeewering". I am working on the (my) beach more than 30 years, but never found a "Hedgehog" before . Mvg. Dirk

Nice piece of history, how come you can not find something like that on an empty beach?. I assume it was under the sand and a storm uncovered it? Pete

Nice piece
Dirk, what an amazing find, a truly unique piece of military history, would make a nice display piece in your yard.
Do you often find dangerous items like mines, ordinance etc?

Off topic but!!
I have a great photo of Brian Gough and Dirk standing in front of a WWI ship that is rusting away right beside Dirk's beach. Maybe Geoff can hold a seminar at the Caldwell's shindig or some such place and teach all of us non computer types how to post a photo.
Maybe we could call it "MLU for Idiots". Barry

hrm, unless this was answered somewhere else that i don't know about...
a hedgehog is the big steel THING in the first pictures. it was an obstacle on beaches, here used by the Germans along the Atlantic Wall. it prevents landing craft and tanks from moving to and over the beach. they were also placed further out so at high tide if a boat came over it would get damaged from below. watch Saving Private Ryan, they hide behind them at Omaha Beach.

hegehog vs
well, hegehogs in Europe anyway as the lovely relics we so adore and seek are often found hiding under the brambles and brush of the thick "hedges" quite particular to England and especially Europe.
Here in Canada, where we do not have this type of (very formidable) "hedgerows", Convoy Magazine has chosen to call them "wildflowers"... Why? because like wildflowers, they're often spotted out in the middle of fields or beside old buildings...unwanted, unloved, and often considered by the property owners as an annoyance--something to be yanked out of the ground to be rid of ...like...weeds... with only the time and effort of the task preventing them from doing so but some people's "weeds" are things of beauty!...indeed "flowers" in the wild... and and while some of the "uninitiated" might call such abandoned cabs and chassis...junk.. we see them and go.. OOOOO....AAAAAH.. things of beauty..a joy to behold.... (and immediately wonder, "If I can drag this home..." so while Dirk's obstacle surely fits the title "hedgehog", here in Canada when you find an old wrecked CMP or jeep ..it's really a "wildflower" besides, it might soften the initial shock when you say...Honey I brought you a wildflower...as opposed to saying I brought you a hedghog.....well maybe? cheers Marc Convoy Magazine http://www.geocities.com/convoymagazine http://www.geocities.com/lga25ubique
