David:
I doubt if for the British military.
The look like export vehicles (bonneted), probably from the 50's or early 60's and maybe for the oil trade. Could have gone to South America, for example. Probably not North Africa as most of those had the double roof on the cab.
What is the source of your excellent photos?? That might help.

They are from Pearsons of Liverpool...the top and tractor units appear to be boat hauliers?

I would rather guess log haulers.
Somewhere I have some old Leyland magazines, in the celler, that had tons of pics of export vehicles. I will try to find them this evening.
