Hi Darrell;

The Valentine 7.92in flame mortar was an experimental vehicle consisting of a Valentine with turret removed and replaced by a fixed heavy mortar intended to project a 25 pound TNT incendiary shell to demolish concrete emplacements. Maximum range of this weapon was 2000 yards and it's effective range was 400 yards. It never made it past the trial phase by the Petroleum Warfare Department.

Cheers

Hi Mark

Tanks for the additional photo.

I still don't quite understand why it was called a flame Mortar. I see that it was an incendiary projectile but also that it was intended for bunkers and emplacements.

How so. What effect did it have on the concrete? I can only opine that it was an air sucker as it burned and those inside died of suffocation. Maybe it had some penetrative qualities? I dunno.
