Default Cap badge and insignia indentification.

Hi all,
Can anyone help me with this? I'm a little confused...

This photo is labeled: Lieutenant-Colonel L.D. McGee of No.5 Armoured Brigade Workshop, Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (R.C.E.M.E.), Italy, 1944 (Library and Archives Canada)

Can anyone identify the cap badge and sleeve insignias?
I am expecting to see a rectangular maroon patch (5th Armoured Division) on the sleeve, and the standard 3 shielded RCEME badge:

Am I missing something, or do I just not understand the Canadian army insignias yet?

Thank you!
