The Restorer's Lament
Hi gals & guys
A lovely old gentleman who has been helping me with some research sent along this poem. It was written by a West Australian person and related to restoring a military vehicle for a run to Darwin in 2000. I thought it rather appropriate for the Restoration Forum and should be in every restorer's workshop. Bob THE RESTORER'S LAMENT There it sits a pile of rust Years of misuse and covered in dust Four flat tyres and a smashed up tray Only one door but what the hey Can you imagine the happiness and joy? If only I can restore this old boy In next to no time I'll have it stripped down And one day soon I'll be driving it round town So here I sit surrounded by bits I think I'm going out of my wits Some bits are green and others are brown But it’s the flaming rest that gets you down The gearbox is bung and the engine is crook What I don't know about restoring would fill a book The time is getting shorter and 2000 draws nigh Why couldn't I be a computer guy? Sit in the house all warm and cosy Playing computer games, everything is rosy But alas it wasn't to be The restorer's bug has bitten me So as I sit here alone in the shed Away from the fire and the warmth of my bed Knee deep in rust and dirt and grime There must be a better way to spend my time Bitten not once but twice more Another Blitz and a Fergie queue at the door Will I make the 2000, only time will tell? It might be so close; I could be saved by the bell Hammer hits my finger and I give out a scream Another flat digit now ain't that supreme Who said life isn't easy; it could have been me I think I might jack it up and go have some tea Now wait just a moment and hold it right there Don't lose your temper, no need to swear To throw in the towel would be a sin You can't let this grubby old rust monster win So lets chip some paint and brush off some rust 'Cause its Darwin in 2000 or BLOODY WELL BUST |
