Log Books
I am looking to start up a few log books for the vehicles.
I have had a look at the "permanent record for "A" vehicles" on the AWM site and looked around for Military Vehicle log books or even vehicle log books. Collins has a not to bad version but I would prefer something more suited to Vehicle operation . Does anyone have any clues??? I would be happy to have a copy of an original that i could copy on and get bound. Most of the stuff on the market is for miles run and reason for trip for tax purposes. I would imagine there would be a major works section, a mods section as well as the daily log . |

The N.Z Army ran two vehicle books, AB (army book?) 53 and AB54.
The AB 53 was the running book with date, mileage start, mileage end, purpose of trip etc. The AB 54 was the record of workshop maintenance and repairs detailing service work done, dates, major component changes (replacement engine numbers etc. I think this system was a carry over of the Brit system from WWII. Both books (lace tied, to be able to add pages) were carried together in a canvas cover in the veh. to give the M.Ps something to look at. Is that what you wanted?

Gina,
The AAB417A Permanent Record Book for A Vehicles (the ones on the AWM site are AB417A's from a few of the Centurions) contain 12 sections: 1. summary of veh mileage, hours run, fuel & oil consumption 2. record of transfers between units 3. record of inspections and classifications 4. record of official mods 5. workshop repairs, overhauls, by date 6. brief particulars of the vehicle (engine no., etc) 7. main engine history (lists engine changes, serial numbers etc) 8. charging set engine history & mods 9. winch engine history (applicable to ARV, bridgelayer) 10. barrel history 11, breech ring history 12. breech mechanism history The AWM examples will have unused pages in each section (they are rarely, if ever completely filled out, if at all: some sections never seem to be used much), so it would be possible to have them copied and that could form the basis of a 'tailored' log book for your purposes. Otherwise, make it up yourself using a table in MS Word, print, and bind. Mike C |

Hudson stores
Some Melbournites may recall Hudson Stores located in the top end of Bourke St. It was a pre wartime hardware store , it was a very old building that was about to collapse .
In the 1970's they had a eclectic range of WW2 vehicle parts , Bren carrier bits and other stuff . They sold the Aust. Bren carrier log books for 20c each , and dispatch rider log books too , these were sold to the public as note books for scribbling a shopping list in . I bought a few of the log books but seem to have lost them over the years . I recall the military side curtains hanging from the ceiling with the price in shillings /- The club members in the know would go there and buy the US vehicle blackout lights new in the box for $5 . They also had the Marmon Herrington plates ..... the oval with the M-H wings and the other M-H plates too , in brass and aluminium . Mike

many thanks Lynn and Mike.
Yep thats about the info I need. I will contact the AWM and see if they will offer copies of the blank pages or attempt to get the NZ pubs that suit. otherwise practice my spread sheet abilities and make them up. I have used aircraft engine logs for the W-670's . All but the one in my tank are NOS so I am confident of the hours on them. The one in my tank is slated for replacement next year. ( errrr getting the armour off being the biggest part of that job) For the soft skinned vehicles I figure I will treat the engine like a component and regulate servicing on miles driven as per what I suppose to be normal Army practice. I see the Armoured vehicles a bit more like an aeroplane in terms of service requirements and the pubs have them serviced according to engine hours. Main thing is to establish routine servicing bases on Time in operation and calendar time . ( the W-670 has a TBO of 1000 hrs or 12 years . Not sure if I would go so far as a bulk strip at 12 years but certainly a major inspection with engine out.) |
