Default NMVA suffers loss due to major fire

Sadly this fire occurred yesterday and some of our members were affected. The Niagara Military Vehicle Association had a large collection of vehicles stored at a former chicken farm. The site was quite large and had about 40 businesses in the various buildings. The NMVA was able to get about 80% of their vehicles out before the fire conditions worsened and was no longer safe to get anymore. Sadly a lot lost everything.

The pictures were pulled from some public Facebook posts. The google maps picture shows the site layout. I believe the NMVA were in two shorter and 1st long building on the left side.

Thoughts to all those affected.

If there is any comfort, those three would be among the last to burn if the fire started almost anywhere else. Also, they look to the west of the rest of the site. Prevailing winds in winter are Northwest to Southeast or West to East. We'll be hoping to hear how the collection fared.

Edited - I found a historic weather reporting website. On 9 Feb the winds started at zero, then increased from 5 to 10 to 15 kph throughout the day, and as conjectured were from Northwest to Southeast.

Waiting for someone in the collection to make a report.

If months had feelings, I think February has it right. It has the decency to be really short, so life can start again in March.

Update from Gavin Young, current NMVA President.
Quote:
I am the current President of the NMVA.

- yes the fire was at our storage facility. We share that place with 29 other shops, and over 100 private individuals that store cars/ equipment.

- I cannot detail what was lost personally by members. Many of whom have not had access to the site. It is a sensitive and private matter and there is an investigation on going by fire/ insurance. Access may not be granted for some time.

- We managed to get a lot of the vehicles out and to safety. Some we were not. ( projects )

- memorabilia , miltaria , all club signs / posters / tools / spare parts for individuals and the club were lost.

- if you know any individual members , I ask that you reach out directly to them. Some large vehicles may need ‘re-homing’ in the coming weeks.

Please feel free to PM me. I can share my phone number.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

What an awful tragedy! Very sad to hear that some irreplaceable property was destroyed, though I understand there were no lives lost.

All my best wishes to all those affected.

My worst nightmare.......what a loss. It's definately not the first time the MV collector world gets hit by fire and not the first time we have seen horrible pictures like this on the forum.....I can only hope indeed most collectors vehicles have survived.

Certainly “food for thought” to anyone who has their equipment “stored” anywhere.
In the auto club that I used to belong to we had insurance for the building and that was it.
Members were responsible for their own individual insurance on vehicles housed there. Something to consider for any collector is to have a policy put in place while a vehicle is under restoration, as most guys don’t.
I think Hagerty offers such protection.

The storage facility that I use has working, inspected and tested sprinkler systems. I would not consider ANYTHING else.
