Dyna Trac XM 571

[Bob Moseley (RIP)]

Hi all

A contact of mine has one of these vehicles that he is restoring and has asked for some research assistance. It is known as an Articulated Utility Carrier - XM-571. I have no knowledge of these vehicles, I don't even know what one looks like. His was made in 1968 and apparently they were used in the Vietnam War.

Any information, especially manuals, would be greatly appreciated.

Bob, the Dynatrac was sold at John Bellfield's auction. I believe it was lot number 76. John only had the front section (vehicle) the trailer was driven also I believe (and tracked). I don't recall the rear section at John's.

This is a picture of the one at the Melbourn tank museum and the vehicle was built by Canadair ..It has a 6 cylinder Chev Corvair(Unsafe at any speed) engine,gas...
You may be able to get a manual from them..

Bombardier is the succesor company to Canadair, at least as far as the aviation end of things. Their website doesn't give immediate help about military vehicles. The Iltis was badged as Bombardier, so an appeal to the Iltis experts might get you a contact name or a suggestion about which branch of the company to approach. Bombardier has their fingers into many enterprises so it might be hard to find the right individual to talk to. Also, they have done some corporate reorganizations to muddy the water.

Try www.bombardier.com as well as www.brp.com (for Bombardier Recreational Products, makers of Ski-Doo, Rotax engines , Johnson outbard motors (I didn't know this until today) plus more).

Also look at http://www.museebombardier.com/en/co...e1939_1945.htm for what the company were doing for WW2. Perhaps the museum has information that they might be willing to share about postwar ventures in the same direction? This is a bit of a long shot since Bombardier and Canadair were separate companies at the time you need information for.

Abstract : The performance and cooling characteristics of the XM-571 vehicle were determined and evaluated. The engine was set up in a dynamometer cell and high ambient performance and cooling tests were conducted at full throttle. The engine was then installed in the vehicle and the vehicle was set up in a dynamometer cell. High ambient performance and cooling tests were conducted at full throttle with a 3-5 mph headwind with solar intensity radiation. Maximum observed engine horsepower was 77 at 3800 rpm. Maximum observed sprocket horsepower varied from 64 to 69 at 3800 rpm engine speed, depending on the transmission gear range. Optimum sprocket fuel consumption was 0.63 pound per horsepower hour. The vehicle at full throttle cooled at 115 F ambient with Code F-84 auxiliary cooling fan installed, the transfer case oil level one pint low, and the engine cooling air exhaust dampers secured open. Maximum engine sump oil and spark plug temperatures were 229F and 394F. Maximum transmission and transfer case oil temperatures were 265F and 270F. (Author)
