Default CMP tow eyes

Two questions gentlemen: I'm looking for a pair of tow eyes for the front bumper of my C15. Does anybody have a pair for sale?
2nd question: if and when I do find a pair do they mount horizontally or vertically? Reason I ask is because most CMP's I've seen have then mounted vertically but on Keith's web site there are pictures of Dooley's old C15 with the tow eyes mounted horizontally. Is there are a proper way or can they be mounted to suit the needs of the situation?
Thanks for any info and HAPPY EASTER!

Default Horizontal or Vertical depends on year

It depends on the year `41 `42 the pins are vertical `45 pins are horizontal. Now can someone fill in the change over date?

Default Tow Eyes

I was lead to believe that the vertical eyes were on 4WD vehicles and the horizontal ones were on 2WD vehicles. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me.

As all of my trucks (all Chevy) are 4WD I think that the answer lies in a actual manufacturing change. Someplace in my correspondence with Bart Vanderveen he mentioned the change over date. But I can not find the letter at the moment. As the change requires that the holes be in a different place it s the bumper and the frame mounting plate it must have been for a particular reason.

Default Bumper Width?

I thought the reason had to do with the width of the bumper - i.e. they were mounted horizontally on 5" bumpers and vertically on 6' bumpers.

From Rod Diery's website: http://users.bigpond.net.au/blitz_trucks/MODELS.html

"BUMPERS…Ford F8 and Chevrolet C8, C8A and C8AX all were fitted with 5" wide front bumpers. All other CMPs were fitted with 6" wide bumpers. Chevrolet C15s have the slot for the crank handle cut into the bumper itself. I'm not sure if the C8 is the same but I suspect it would be. All other CMPs have the crank handle guide on a small post bolted to the top of the bumper. The holes in the front face of all bumpers near the ends are for the forward facing green reflectors which were mounted behind the bumper. These reflectors can be found on Nos. 11, 12 and early N0. 13 cab trucks."

The skinny ones are Chev, and the fatter ones are Ford. They all seem to have Canadian part numbers cast in them. The chev ones were copied for the ACCO. The Aust Army has an "A" frame drawbar for ACCOs and they will only fit Chev eyes, not the Ford eyes. That's OK as there is never a requirement to tow a Ford!

the one on the left I have found on both ford and chev, the one on the right I have only found on chev so far. Some times you need to toe a ford when it has no oil... he he.

Isn't it amazing the Ford Vs Chev thing! It has always existed in NASCAR, V8Supercars, and suburban homes in seemingly all continents.
Mind you, I'd rather push my Ford than drive a Chev.

Default Towing Eyes

http://users.bigpond.net.au/blitz_trucks/MODELS.html

"TOWING EYES…Chevrolets C8, C8A, C8AX and C15 all have their front towing eyes mounted to the front bumper so that they swivel in a horizontal plane. All other CMPs have them mounted so that they swivel in the vertical plane."

This is from observation, mine and many others!

Regards
Rod

Default doors

Rod I had a look at your site and from what I understand the doors found onFords in Australia are canadian built as canadian chevs have the same doors. In Australia we call them ford and chev doors but they really are australian built doors for chevs and the ford doors with the circle in the centre are canadian built the same applies for window frames chev (holden) built their own in australia whilst the canadians used the same frame for both ford and chev. when you get looking there are other differences as well, it would be interesting to compare as to what was built in australia for both ford and chev.

Max, here's a start. Mike Cecil wrote in Antipodean Ford CMPs:
Quote:
Ford: all chassis, mechanicals, cab floor/lower cab frame, upper (windscreen) cab frame, doors, windscreen frames, front shell, wheels. Rest manufactured locally in Aust: cab floor, engine cover, cab back, roof, guards, spare wheel carrier & tool box, body. Mods also placed to satisfy Aust Army requirements, such as windscreen opening device on centre column of upper cab frame, and lengthened windscreen opening brackets.

Chev: all chassis and mechanicals, wheels. Rest manufactured locally: complete cabs, complete bodies, spare tyre rack and tool box.

Bill, several times I have replied to your emails, but they are returned as "Undeliverable" I'm not sure what the problem is but I receive your emails just fine, so I'm letting you know via this forum that Yes!, I want the tow eyes and that I received your last email about costs and will be mailing you a money order on Monday. Don't sell them!

Default CMP Tow rings

Derek: Tks for reply re above. Don't know why messages have been returned as undeliverable, sounds like the government is running internet, it is typical of their usual "efficiiency". However, I still have tow rings for you: tks for reply, & will forward them when pmt arrives. Tks again.
It's very interesting about your family coming from this area & your brother helping to build Headinley Gaol (they still use this spelling). You probably wouldn't recognize the build up in this area, we live in a new development, about 4 kilometers from city limits, next to Breezy Bend Golf Course, on the south side of the Assiniboine River with all the city conveniences except we don't have to put up with the bumbling city council of Winnipeg. Will watch for your letter re above & get rings off to you soonest.

Cheers, Bill Spence
