RAAF crash boats
I found this pic in a op shop book
' Aust. and NZ warships since 1946 ' These crash boats were delivered to the RAN and commissioned in 1944-45 . In 1946 they were transferred to the RAAF . A couple of them lasted until 1985 . Five years after the Corowa event began ! This pic is Neutral Bay ( Sydney harbour ? ) 1960's I would think . Engines 2 X Hall Scott V12's . Speed 33.5 knots The vessel 02-113 was built by Lars Halvosen in 1957 to the WW2 design , it had 2X GM diesels . Why they made one more .... ?

1972
Here is one still in RAAF service circa 1972-3 , Townsville QLD
source http://www.adf-messageboard.com.au/i...showtopic=1957 02-109 was ex WW2 RAN HMAS Air View, commissioned 20/11/1944 . It was disposed / sold in 1985 , one of the last to see service, it is pictured in Neutral bay in the first post ! People won't believe this, but UPTONS of Corowa had a ex crash boat Hall-Scott V12 petrol engine for sale , would have been mid 1980's . it had a chronic damaged block .

I well remember that Hall Scott V12 at Uptons Mike, what a massive beast they are. I believe that the American PT boats used three of them. Imagine trying to keep the fuel up to that lot!
If memory serves correctly, John Mackie and his son have one of these engines part restored. David

They had one at Point Cook in the late 60's when I was doing my flying training in case a Winjeel fell in the drink.
I have a feeling it was replaced with a more modern style of boat not long afterwards. |
