Here are a few carriers that I saw on a trip to the UK in Pounds shipyard at Portsmouth in years gone by, If you like them I will post more, it really was a treasure house in those days, Regards Ron
By the way this must have been the best carrier in the yard as it had been placed there upside down years befor, also the large round balls that you see and the cables, there were hundreds of the balls that were floats used to suspend submarine cables attached to those cables Carriers everwhere By the way all of the carriers and tanks were unloaded out side of the yard and driven into the yard, they were all runners when Pounds got them

Pounds
Hi Niels,
I dont know about all of the items but a lot of them were saved. the price of steel at that time had fallen and the owner Tony told me that it was not worth it to cut them up at time,he also liked owning them, in fact tomorrow I will post a couple of pics of two Russian tanks that arrived whilst we were talking they were complete in all ways straight from the docks, no torch work had been done even had the crews helmits inside, the gates were closed work ceased and the tanks were given a try out around the yard, now thats what you call a great day out, Regards Ron

Don't suppose you took any pics of the M10's that were in the yard at the same time. I am restoring one that used to be there many years ago and it would be good to see if I could identify it ?

Clear yard
The yard at pounds is clear of all carrier parts.
When did you take those pictures? They must be 15 years old |

Yes the pics were taken on one of my trips to the U K and they would be just a bit over 15 years old, but when you think of it that is not really such a long time ago, just a blink of an eye really, just goes to proove that NOW is always the correct time to save our history, that is really the reason I posted the pics to get people fired up, and restoring instead of just saying one day I will do it,time goes by and rust never sleeps,
Regards, Ron

Hi Ron The carrier that you were not supposed to see is in immaculate shape! If we would only have had the foresight and finances to preserve some more of these items back then but for the most part it was considered junk. I helped my father restore a Hawker Hurricane to flying condition over the past 35 years. It had been purchased for ONLY $50.00CAN after the war by a farmer who wanted the engine coolant. Dad sold the aircraft 2 years ago & was able to retire after flying his dream! Its just amazing how valuable these antiques have become. Cheers Jan Whereatt

this is just sickening me to the core, all those carriers gone to waste ! all those sprockets and tracks (and spares) that could have been saved from the smelters, this thread rates close to the "Abandoned Carrier" thread on the frustration scale what a crying shame.
can anyone tell me why some T16's hav the solid wheels and some have the Spoked ones ala universal carriers ? is this a Mk thing ? Richard |

Most of the carriers in pounds yard were saved. Many of them have now been rebuilt.
I had heard rummers about a universal in a shed at Pounds, so it was ture. but this was sold on. Who to ? I can't read the numbers on the sides, can you read them on the original photos? As I am sure the present owners would love copys. I think the original T16 had spoke wheels and those built after 1945 had solid. I think it was just a costing thing and as the T16 is heavier than a Universal there was less chance of broken spokes |

the solid weels are more cheeper i see carrier t16 1944 with solid weels and the other weels broken easy more dan the solid weels.

Somewhere in time
Hello Pablo, I checked my passport and the date I was there was September 1988, the place Portsmouth England, it really was fantastic to see all of the armour and all in one place and up for grabs if you had the money, I was made very welcome whilst I was there, I did mention on the armour forum that whilst I was there one day two Russian tanks arrived so Tony closed the gates the tanks were unloaded and they were given a good workout around the yard, those were the days, I will post Pics of the Russian tanks arrival on the armour forum, they were uncut fully opperational every thing in working order staight from the docks, the crew helmits still hanging inside,
Thanks for your interest Regards Ron
