Mechanical Temperature gauge repair
I am repairing a mechanical temp gauge. The thin capillary tube sheered off at the brass capsule and I have pretty much figured out the processes to restore and have one question, is the entire "system", capsule, capillary tube and the bourdon tube inside the gauge filled/saturated with fluid ? As ether is impossible to source I will be using cold start as a fill liquid. Any insight on this repair/restoration is welcome.

I haven't used the information in the attached PDF file to make a repair but it does look like a reasonably researched and written article. When I was first thinking about the repair I found several articles online:
http://www.avi-plus.com/repair-tips-...ure-gauge.html http://www.ply33.com/Repair/tempgauge http://www.mgaguru.com/mgtech/dash/dt101.htm When Googling "mechanical temperature gauge repair", I found may of the results were referring back to the above links and several said they had used the advice in the articles with success. Ebay shows several vendors for ether in the US, none in Canada while I write this. At least one of the US based sellers does ship to Canada. I will be interested to hear your comments after your repair. To add to the information files, does anyone know the lengths of the tube on CMP Chevrolets? Cab 11/12, Cab 13, C15TA, Fox, Otter, others? My impression is that Fords used electrical temperature gauges but if any used mechanical I'd be happy to see the lengths required as well. |

Thanks Grant
Two of those are on my favourites, while Ply33 efforts are for a swap of a fluid filled capsule from a donour gauge to an original gauge my hands are tied on going that route as the replacement donour capsules are 9.5mm wide and it has to go in a 8.5mm wide fitting on a coolant line. I travel to the US often so having a friend hold the ether for me is no problem. Good old ebay. Here is a good article and pretty much the route I am going. http://www.170v.de/yabbfiles/Attachm...ev1-022014.pdf Last edited by James P; 23-01-18 at 21:48. |
