Default Prairie Command Feb. meeting..

a nice get together at the Winnipeg Police Museum working shop... See pics of their current restoration..."Bomb Truck"...all courtesy of our P.C. member Dirk Derin. I think Rob Love may have more to add here. Cheers Rob Fast

I'll just add that Derk has put a lot of hours into preserving a military truck with a known history in Winnipeg. The truck was originally the bomb truck at CFB Winnipeg. When the DND got out of the bomb disposal game they gave the truck to the Winnipeg Police Service. It was disposed of in the late 70s, at which time it became a locksmith's service vehicle, a camper, and then a work truck at the Winnipeg Yacht club.

It is also neat to see the different eras of police vehicles. At some point, what is simply an old ex-cop car becomes a neat piece of history that would otherwise be too easily lost. After all, how many mid 70s Crown Victorias do you see on the road these days?

You don't see many ex-police hovercraft either. I had forgotten Winnipeg had even owned one. Must have been brutally noisy inside with three engines howling away!

Great day, Dirk! Thanks.

From my limited experience with hovercraft, there were a couple of problems. First, the incredible amount of dust they create when on land. Secondly, the lack of brakes and poor steering overall. I consider them more of a novelty than a useful tool. It would seem the WPS eventually agreed, as this one was never replaced.
