Bob, some of the M101 3/4t trailers were eqipped with an aluminum cage enclosure rather than the typical wooden stake sides and top bows.
The cage was made from aluminum tubing and covered in diamond mesh. I believe most of these were engineering type trailers (stores), the lockable mesh construction protecting valuables as well as loose stock which could move and damage tarpaulins.

The proper term for them was "security cage". As Chris mentions, they were used on some SEVs, but also were for cargo trailers used by CQs. The cages from the M101 3/4 ton trailers could be easily transferred to the newer LSVW trailer, so not all the cages may have made it to the surplus market.
Similar cages were available for the 1-1/2 ton trailers, the 5/4 ton cargo, the MLVW, and the LSVW. They are nice in that they support the tarp better (so no pooling of water and leaves on a sagging tarp), and you don't have to replace the wood slats and bows every 5-10 years. Stuart,
I know where there is one locally, it is unused and unloved and I think it has the tarp. I will drop by some night this week and ask the owner about it. I could deliver to Ottawa R |

Ideas that inspire work related projects?
I bought mine to use as, eek!, a garbage trailer. Where I live, I need to go to the local landfill as we have no pickup in the bush. Don't want to foul up my Company pickup with stinky week old trash so a trailer was needed... at least that is the excuse I made up. Next thing you know it will be a restoration project. BTW, it is a 1981 M101A2 and has the 8 bolt type 5/4t truck wheels.
