Default New Book

I am pleased to announce that we will be inviting orders for the new book on the wartime and immediate postwar assembly operations by Pearsons of Liverpool, England. There were over 200 photos I think originally.. Jeeps (US/Canadian/British), Macks, CMPs, Dodges, Federal, Autocar, GMCs, Diamond Ts, Bedfords, FWDs, etc. plus fork-lifts, cranes, and rebuilds: wartime and post-war.

Gals and guys, I understand that there is going to be set up an online facility and another to receive postal payments. In addition will be postage & packing of course but foremost is the thought to get printed copies overseas as quickly and cheaply as possible.

I am going to speak further to my co-author and Boss and will come back in due course especially about previews. We also need to weigh up the finished article to establish postage etc.

The photos by the way are all B&W professional shots: they are originals from 1941-49.

I will let you know what the selling price is and further details when it becomes available.

David,

That looks like wonderful stuff. Did you find evidence that BSA motorcycles were actually built in Liverpool or were they crated for shipping ?

I have never heard it mentioned in motorcycle circles and can picture a few very upset Brummies if this gets out !

I gather that they were uncrated...I think there is a shot with a Dodge D60L crate and in the background in the storage area is another crate with BSAs in it. In the book is a shot with them uncrating BSAs and being assembled.

Default BSAs!

Can you guys please check this photo?

The BSAs with Census Numbers check out, but this seems to be a posed photo as the lady with the spray gun has a stencil for "NORTON" and yet that's a BSA crate...the weight stencil is presumably for Nortons. Rather than unpacking, surely they are crating up for export? Sorry, my previous posting was in error...the caption in the draft book was written in concert with a former employee and I have not got a copy before me so I posted off the top of my head.

Default Trucks in photo

Thanks Mr F!

What are the stake lorries behind the 15-cwt White 15-cwt personnel truck please? Look like GMC CCKW-353. I assume that the right ones are Diamond Ts? There is of course a front winch. There are photos of assembled DT 981s in the book.

David,

The trucks behind the White scout car are GMC CCKW, as are the others on the right. No Diamond T in the photo.

Just saw the photo of the BSA motorcycles as well, looks like they are being dismantled for crating, good photo.

Thanks Richard. We are working on the BSAs at the moment, as this is more interesting it seems than first thought.

As to the GMCs, what is the opinion on the body type please?


B1 CARGO, SPLIT-TYPE AXLES, WITH WINCH [TIMKEN-DETROIT]
B2 CARGO, BANJO-TYPE AXLES, WITH WINCH [CHEVROLET]
C1 STOCK RACK BODY, SPLIT-TYPE AXLES

That body style could be a Budd cargo, minus canopy. It does not look like the Perfection Stake Body.

Attached is a post-war shot of a closed-cab version.

David,

Not an expert on the CCKW, but there may be a clue to the body manufacturer on those crates, they contain body parts. Difficult to read the stencilling, perhaps your photo is clearer.

As regards the Austin K3s...are they as I thought 4 x 2 (K3/YB) or 6 x 4 (K3/YF)? It is just that there appears to be a bogie on the lorry with the Michael Mouse Ears camo tarpaulin.

The Austins are all K3/YB 4x2

There is a mixed bag of machines being crated, to S.5209 and S.7218 with a mix of Census Numbers.

Look like they also did Nortons, as there is a stencil laying on the box to the right.

Would like to find one of those crates unopened, in a warehouse!

I 've suggested on the BSA WM20 forum that the best way to double the value of a crate of M20s is to stencil Norton on the side !

what about Triumph (as in winning the war?).

The Nortons would be 16H models of course..six in a crate 1 ton 2 cwts? BSAs 1 ton 4 cwts.

I apologise..the photo that I though was of a crate with motorcycles was in fact 2 x Austin K3/YB lorries... it seems that these must have been shipped back from somewhere two to a crate and then assembled in Liverpool, presumably for further service in Europe or the Far East. The same of course happened with these BSA and Norton motorycles, and I think Bedford QLs, Austin K2/Y ambulances, and possibly MCC CDSW Breakdown.

Are you saying that the BSA M20 motorcycles in the photo are being unpacked and assembled? I would dispute this because it is evident that the boxes are new and being stencilled, also the census numbers are late, possibly 1944.

These photos are very interesting when zoomed up, all the little details in them.

The GMC 2 1/2 ton in your picture is the non winch equipped version with standard steel body usually by Budd but with other subsidiary companies contributing. Unless you have a head on or three quarters view it will be difficult to determine if its banjo or split axel.
As for the wooden bodies (nice photo by the way) I have a good reference article on the design and construction of GMC cargo bodies unfortunately it got packed ready for moving just the other day. If nobody else provides you detailed information in the mean time I can look it out and quote the relevant information for you when I unpack hopefully in three weeks time :dh:

Opposite...they and presumably Norton 16H m/cs are being diassembled and crated for ..... the Far East? There are two batches of bikes fromthe Census Nunbers and they are all being packed up. Presumably they were refurbished before crating.

As to the GMCs, well we have more photos, and one is of a yard full of them! Same body it seems. Is the "stake" body in the photo online steel or wood?

There are also a few more shots of the GMCs with the same stake body, which is presumably a Budd design. However the bodies have been cut down and stakes virtualy gone in some cases by the time that Pearson's got hold of them!

David they are 'standard' wooden rear bodies for the GMC and not the 'stake' bodies. Although I guess some would call them 'stake' bodies due to the look of them when the troop seats are in the raised position.

Default Stake bodies

Cliff, 1000% correct...the Stake Body was a Perfection one, and the Budd generic Cargo body was just that but of course it used side stakes!
