Gunners slot cover
The FUC-03 illustrated parts catalog lists the cover as CTL 947 SA
for the carrier C31 UCW Welsh guards. But it should fit any MK I or MK II??

purpose of rivets?
The cover Roy shows has 6 rivets that project through the plate to form 6 stubby pins (just like my cover). What purpose do they serve - they don't seem to help position the cross-bar. The cover Ron shows does not have these pins. My original has no part numbers, unusual for a Carrier part. ...... Brian

i think ron his plate is a repro one,a Original plate is 7/16 thick.
the welded pins help to stay the crossbar in horizontal or vertical position. our plate also don,t have the stamped number on it. after esaerch i discovered that the platenumber is tl14115,plate and thecrossbar tl14116,bar locking . the housing number for the stowage bracket is ctl 14120 housing, loophole, coverplate wich is fitted on a Welsh . i don,t know there is a stowage bracket mounted on a mk2. |

Correction! I have just measured my plate accurately with a vernier instead of the plastic rule I used yesterday. It is indeed 7/16". I've studied it with a mag glass and can't find a number. However the stowage holder which is mounted to the left of the firing slot, clearly has a part number. The top edge of my plate has an extra welded piece but no rivets....Could this be a British version? Ron

all the plates i have seen have the welded studs and the welded piece is on the edges rounded, also the other side from the plate has rounded edges.
the barlocking is also round grinded and the plate between the nut and spring sould be bigger, the nut is also welded on the bolt. |

I have been discussing the gunner slot cover plate with Roy by email. He sent me a picture to show the rivets and their purpose. My plate has no rivets, but I just noticed that my front armour has two welded strips to form a rebate for the plate.
Is this a MK2 feature? Is a MK1 smooth? Out of interest:- My Candian parts list quotes CTL 947 SA Gunners slot cover plate My British Chillwell list quotes TL 947 SA Loophole cover plate. Ron Last edited by Ron Pier; 13-07-13 at 08:15. |

Here is Roys picture, bit fuzzy, but shows how the rivets/stubs keep it in place.

Loop Hole Cover.
Gents, This I believe is a genuine loop hole protection plate fitted to a Welsh Guards Carrier.

Shaun
Hi Shaun.
Actually, both those photos are from the same carrier at Ford Canada. You will see the weld bead running down the corner of the front armour in the first photo. behind the loophole cover plate stowage bracket. You have raised an interesting question. Give me a couple of days to look through the photos I have from Ford and I will post a new thread and comments. We might be onto something here. Cheers for now, David |

So is this welded hull with riveted air ducts a designated as MKII*W. I am very confused about late Canadian carriers, and cannot even tell the difference between a MkI* and a MkII* anymore (unless it's on the plate)

Yes Roy. For a one day trip, I did not like the new venue!! I couldn't find anyone as I wasn't used to the layout. When my friend 'Hong Kong Dave' offered to take us round in his Jeep to see some of the exhibits. Vehicle movement was curtailed whilst the arena event was going on, so we had to abandon the idea! My eyes are still giving me trouble from the dust.......Last year it was mud!!! Ron

That carrier has a big (6 digit?) number considering it is a very early MkI* U.C.

was thinking, could it be that the two welded strips to form a rebate for the cover a field modification is?
without the two strips it is possible that a bullet lift off the plate and make some damage inside the hull.maybee that,s why they weld the strips beside the cover. roy |
