Default Movie: 49th Parallel

Interesting review of this classic WW2 movie . Particularly the insights into the filming incidents and the background story.

I love this film. For Australian reviewers, do you remember the soapie actress Cornelia Francis - "You are the weakest link" etc. She is Michael Powell's niece and as far as she is concerned owes her acting career to him when he made "They're a Weird Mob" in Australia in the 1960s when she was employed as a junior - off screen. Powell had the most outstanding cinematic career - here's to him and the 39th p. BTW - how good is Eric Portman in 'The Bedford Incident'?

I had no idea that the Hutterite scenes filmed , were actually done on a real Hutterite community farm. I guess that's why such a intense atmosphere comes across the screen.

I just cannot get over the scene where the U-boat officer played by Portman, says to the sailor sharing the room on the Hutterite farm, words to this effect: " You know, you could make yourself into a really good NAZI if you applied yourself to it"

And, the real life near drowning of the actor in the float plane crash scene .

The ham radio scenes playing chess and the Olivier French character from trois-riviers .

The Germans bickering over who joined the 'party' first .

A great film Mike. I remember reading somewhere (don't hold me to it it) that Howard and Massey et al had taken their low fees to assist with the film being released urgently in the US. It was released there only a few months before Pearl Harbour.

Hi Folks,

I've been a long time follower of this forum and I must say I was surprised when I log in after over a year and I see a disc about of all movies, the 49th parallel.

An interesting tidbit of trivia is that some of the Canadian soldiers used as extras in the making of the film were from the Lincoln and Welland Regiment. Parts of the movie were filmed in Niagara Falls in the fall of 1940 and the movie company hired members of the Regiment to fill various roles.

I've attached a photo held by the museum depiting some soldiers from the unit posing in front of a production van during a break in the filming.

Cheers,

Steve

PS technical question. How can one go about changing their forum name to thier real name. I'd rather not hide behind a nickname seeing as no one else is doing so.

Default Changing username

I had a go to see if I could change your name but it requires an Admin colleague to do so. Is that what you want please? You can I think also change it yourself via the User CP facility.

Of course, as you get older and change interests you may find 'cadetcorps' rather limiting

Yet another reason to change....While I originally thought it would be a simple Identifier (given 13 years of reserve service in the CIC) I see now it doesn't reflect my age. (sounds like a name a cadet or teen might have) Being on the brink of 40 years old, cadetcorps might not have been the best selection.

Thanks Clive
