Yup, the requirements for re-entry to the U.S. are for U.S. citizens and Foreign Nationals alike. I assume the rules will also apply to Resident Aliens, such as myself. Time for me to renew my passport, which I'll try to do next week in Vancouver. I tried to renew it from Texas, but External Affairs Canada in Montreal (surprise, surprise!) kept refusing the pictures I mailed in, even though they were done professionally to Canadian standards. Never got my $75.00 back either!

What Cramp?
Alex,
They are at war after all. If my country was at war I would want the Government to keep tabs on whomever was trying to get into the country. I am surprised that this resriction was waived for as long as it has been for us 'aliens'. Stewart alien in Aberdeen, MD |

Already and issue
Yes, Alex they are making it interesting already. When I came back from the Cadwell weekend this summer I noticed that people showing a passport (I had mine in hand when I stopped) went right through while those with US license plates that didn't provide a passport were having there cars searched and IDs check more closely.
Of course for the next week all US citizens will have to show their Republican Party Card as well. But then again I don't talk politics as it always offends somebody.

It is interesting that when we take Dirk to Hershey he has to go in to US Customs and fill out a form in Dutch and pay a minimal charge. Now they attach a chip to his passport and it is activated as you leave Customs. It can be traced anywhere in the US. I guess they assume the bad guys will always carry their passport.
Uncle Sam is really watching now. Cheers, Barry

My visa application process involved a medical check-up, a copy of my honourable discharge, fingerprinting, and FBI background check, as well as a letter from the RCMP. We Aliens are pre-vetted, so to speak, so I think that the I.N.S. agents figured that we, especially those of us fron Canada, were a pretty safe bet. I've never had a problem (touch wood) returning to the U.S. by just showing my Permanent Resident card. i hope that continues until I get my new passport!

My daughter visited her Dad in Oakland a while back and doesn't have a passport yet. She's Canadian and Canadian born of course I forgot to ask her what getting through customs was like. I assume it wasn't a hassle as she never mentioned it. I guess she'll need a passport for her next visit to her Dad though. I don't have a passport either. Never did. Have only been out of Canada to accompany my daughter on visits to her Dad's and the last time I went along was when she was 8. She'll be 24 soon. Things are different in the crossings now, hey?
I know I'd have no issues with intensive screening and such to get across the border, considering the war and all thats happened since 9/11. I know I'd feel safer just knowing there's a lot of screening, especially when flying Not like the olden days, for sure |
