Default LCVP restoration

A French gentleman found an abandoned Landing Craft Vehicle, Personnel (LCVP) in Brittany, France. He launched a rescue on his own with very limited resources, but an enormous amount of passion and energy (i.e. to rescue the LCVP from the river bed where it had been standing for years he braced old containers around the hull, you have to look at the pictures to believe it). The site contains very nice pictures from WWII LCVPs and a complete slide show on the restoration process.

Default Higgins boat

Another LCVP survivor can be found in the D-Day Museum at New Orleans, USA:

Now what is the type of craft shown in this picture?

Found it looks like a LANDING CRAFT, PERSONNEL (LARGE).
A further web search reveiled it is one, indeed: http://www.ddaymuseum.org/about/news_092404.html
Guess it help to look on the museum's site first, eh?

Hanno,

I read that there should be four LCVP survivors in Normandy, but I have only seen two in person uptill now. This one is at the entrance of the museum at UTAH beach:

I know another one that is outside the Omaha Museum in the nissen-huts:

The other boat you pictured is indeed an LCP, of which about 80 were delivered to the British for the Normandy landings. The base is quite similar to the LCVP/Higgins design.

LCVP's were also produced post war, allthough these were made from fibre-glass.

Should we open another thread specifically for surviving landing boats and craft? I have been seacrhing for information on these over the last few weeks. There are at least two surviving LST's and one US LCT on display in the USA and one surviving British LCT in the UK. There should still de several craft and boats in service in merchant service and/or in the Greek and Fillipine navy!

Alex

Phil,

It would be great if you could show us some pictures of your visit to LST 325.

A true Normandy Veteran!

regards,

Alex

p.s. Do they also have any of the original LCVP's hanging on the sides?

I've seen that one too, plus one in Southern France set up as a memorial.

I think that is the same one as shown in the link I posted earlier, PA26-28.

I prefer to stay in the topic of smaller landing craft (much to be learned there), but sure, be my guest and post away here!
