Just to support Keefy about not messing with our fauna, here are a couple of other examples sent to me by a mate. I believe these were taken on the current construction of the Aldelaide to Darwin rail extension.

These animals were nurtured on Vegemite.

That's it - my sister's just come back from holiday in Oz and she loved the place - but I'm never going there without bodyarmour, a bren gun, a flame thrower and a coupla dozen rpgs,

It's alright Dave, the secret to vegemite is you must carry a jar with you at all times to sooth your nerves as well as calm the fauna. Just remember to keep the vegemite with you at all times and you'll be fine. If any of you are coming to Australia be free to look us up and we'll protect you from the fauna just ask Keefy. We protected our friends from Canada when a snake came on the scene whilst we were unloading a Blitz load of grain ( he just went further up the ladder on the silo, we forgot to tell him snakes don't climb ladders real well) it took a while before he came back down and was visibly shaken by the whole affair, his main problem is he's not a vegemite eater but a maple syrup man. The snake was dealt with by a vegemite eater. Our fauna might bite , kick and scratch ,but at least they don't smell like some fauna in Canada do.

Australia doesn't need to do it on volume, they can do it with quality. IIRC "OZ" is home to 6 of the 10 deadliest snakes on the planet.

I'm sure he'll be bringing a suitcase full of clean knickers with 'em when he comes...to deal with the snake problem..

Are you maligning our SKUNKS Max? I'll have you know that they make great pets

... I used to have one (well, Jackie was my stepdads skunk, but Jackie really liked me BEST!

) Jackie never sprayed once while living, and used to curl up around my neck on my shoulders when we went for drives in the car.

Unfortunate end to Jackie (told to me by my stepdad) he had been sleeping under a tractor and my stepdad ran over him with the tractor, killing him of course. Jackie cut loose then, the one and only known time he sprayed.

You can be very peculiar at times...

We used to have some enormous ones at Zephyr, and the buggers got into our garbage regularly. Then Julia ran over one in the driveway and they disappeared, but not before my retriever got sprayed in the face chasing one... oi, nasty business, that!

They DO grow huge. I was told Jackie was humongous when full grown. I hadn't seen him in a long time and didn't see him when he was killed. We'd moved to Beausejour then.

BC seems to grow REALLY BIG skunks ... give them lots of room when you spot them and their little babies walking across your lawn.

I've always heard that KETCHUP was good to slather on animals sprayed by a skunk, to try and get rid of the smell. I don't know if this actually works.

Fortunately, I had a bottle of something called "Skunk-off" in reserve. It neutralizes the biologics in skunk juice. It was 2300h and I had to rub it into him through his three layers of fur. Even then it didn't take everything out. He stunk worse than when we were on the farm and he was rolling in fresh horse-poop. Retrievers are darlings, but they can be dumb as door mice.

A skunk that has been stranded in Toronto for a month after hitching a ride inside a California transport truck is finally going home.

The stinky animal has been given the name Dorothy because "she fell asleep and woke up in a strange land."

Two employees from radio station Live 105.5 FM near Los Angeles have offered to return the striped animal, whose tale has touched many of their listeners.

"We heard the story and we felt like we wanted to help. Our hearts went out to this little black sheep," host Trace Nealy told CTV's Canada AM on Monday.

"Actually, if she were a sheep, she would have had it a lot easier."

Volunteers from the Toronto Wildlife Centre offered to help co-ordinate the skunk's return to its native environment, but airlines and trucking companies refused to carry the animal because of its smell.

On Monday, Nealy and her producer, Ryan Miller, began their 5,000-kilometre voyage back to California. The pair are taking time off work to perform the good deed.

They said they aren't worried about what could happen inside their RV along the way, despite knowing skunks can project foul-smelling spray as far as 10 feet.

"We've been assured by the Toronto Wildlife Centre that skunks... are not prone to spray unless they're really, really scared," Miller said.

"So we're just going to do our best to not jump in there and shake her cage."

The skunk didn't spray while riding in the back of the transport for seven days until she reached the Toronto area.

Dorothy wouldn't likely be able to survive with Canadian skunks and laws prevent her from being released here.

Nealy and Miller will be documenting their adventure and giving their listeners daily updates.

Nealy said she has rescued other animals in the past, including stray cats and dogs, and even a squirrel that she took care of for years.

She described Dorothy as "adorable."

Nealy and Miller will be taking a bit of a detour along the way.

"We're going to stop in Kansas too, just for nostalgia," Miller said.
