Default any idea what the markings are

Hi

A fellow Engineer reenactor has asked if I can find out what the markings on a bag he has mean.

RCE F.91.734

It’s clearly a Royal Canadian Engineers Bag.

Hi Cliff;

It looks to be an 'Army Service Number' (F 91734) issued from Military District No. 6 (Provinces of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island) when the soldier in question joined either the Canadian Active Service Force (2 Sep 39 to 7 Nov 40) or the Canadian Army (Active) (7 Nov 40 to 1 Oct 46). Perhaps Clive (aka servicepubs) will read this and tell us exactly to which unit the block of service numbers containing F91734 was assigned to.

Cheers

Hello Mark

Thank You for the information and prompt response. Thought it looked like a service number but the full stops (periods) made it look like a stores number. My Grandfather was RCE Drive Mechanic in UK and NWE his number was M-41344 and his brother was RCIF Irish fusiliers with Y force Jamaica, his number was M-477631i have papers for them both.

will Clive read this or should i PM Him.

Chimo!

Default Army Service Numbers

Cliff,

Your first number, F91734, was one allocated to 1st Field Company, RCE. The 1st Field Company was a CASF / Active unit.

Your grandfather's number, M41344, was allocated to 13 District Depot, RCE. It was also an Active unit located in Military District 13 (Alberta).

Your grand uncle's number, M477631, was allocated to No 13 Militia Training Centre. It was a Reserve unit also located in MD 13.

All of this information comes from Clive's book 'Regimental Numbers of the Canadian Army' (no date).

Dan.
