Default HUP half shafts

In May I thought that I had finally had a road worthy HUP and my son and I took it for a test drive. 100yrds down the road there's a bang and we loose drive. I engaged the front axle and had drive, so I knew it was either a diff or more likely a half shaft as I have suffered that problem with land rovers. After stripping it all down I found that the long rear half shaft had broken, in fact it had been broken previously and had been bodged and the ground out to hide the repair. I assume that this had been done to sell the vehicle because the repair wouldn't last long. So the hunt began for a new one. It seemed that there was no chance of finding one, so I decided to have one made. After some hunting I found a couple of companies that could manufacture one, the nearest being a company could Rakeway engineering. All seemed well and they quoted me a maximum turn round of 8 weeks. I left it 10 weeks and rang to see if I could collect the shafts only to be told by the owner that they hadn't even looked at them and, these are his words, "that if I rang back in 2 weeks if he could be bothered he might have a look at them". So the next morning I picked the shafts up and took them the another company GB Engineering. It has taken some time and I have missed the summer but eventually I have a set of new shafts.

Default shaft

A club member here had a similar problem, in his case the vehicle was a ex NZ army C8AX. The front axle was the issue. Len found a C15A front axle half shaft and an engineering shop shortened the shaft and re-splined the end.

Default Good job finding someone who could make both sides

Hi Johnathan

Does the company that made your axle have and a web site if so please share it with us as a starting point for anybody else who discover they need an axle.

Having a pair made was a very smart idea, over the years I broke both rear axle sides, first being the long side, with help of many friends on MLU a used shaft was found to get my HUP back on the road. Couple of years later the short side snapped. That time no used shaft could be found. So like you I started looking for a company that could make a new one company located in Colorado, US Mark Williams, just check they are still in business. http://www.markwilliams.com/ I share them as a resourse, 2005 they were very good to work with.

At the time they did my short side shaft I asked about having a long side shaft made and they could not make the long side because they didn't have a heat treating oven large enough to handle the length. They make axles for racing and other high power applications.

Glad to hear your HUP is back to moving under rear wheel drive again.

Cheers Phil

Here you go Phil http://berrisford.co.uk/index.php/ As with your contact they do race buggies and components but I am told, will do anything really and although I don't usually recommend companies this one keeps its promises.

A good reason to keep a yard full of donor vehicles?
