Default 15 cwt CMP FFW

Having recently acquired a 1944 Chev Wire-5 cab and chassis, with a 2J1 GS cargo box, I'm thinking about the possibility of making this unit into an FFW.

To that end, does anyone have any input with reference to the conversion kit which would convert a GS box into an FFW box?

Particularly, I'm seeking the dimensions and material list for the table which the WS No 19 was mounted.

Without going into all the details, what I really am looking for is an EME drawing, or similar reference, which provides information for the complete installation.

Any info, anyone?

Jon, I've checked the Illustrated BODY PARTS LIST D.N.D. Special Pattern Bodies of October 1941 (Revised Jan. 1942): in only lists the following variants for the Model 15-cwt (Steel) body: General Service, Cable Layer, Ant-Tank Tractor, Personnel Carrier and Van. So at least until January 1942 the body for the Fitted For Wireless version did not actually differ from the General Service version.

Try to contact Brian Asbury, PO Box 26, Milton, Ontario L9T 2Y3, Tel: (519) 853-1738.

Some years ago he was restoring a 1944 C15A equipped with a wireless GS Box: Date of Mfg: OCT. 11 1944, Chassis Serial 4844404216, Vehicle Model: C-15A-WIRE-3. He is hopefully able to help you with the information you need.

BTW, Jon... the museum in Kingstons has a restored 15cwt FFW (minus engine) on display. If you want, I can take photos of the inside of the box. I was told that the 19 set sits on the original table, so I can also take measurements for you.

Default Wireless Body

Jon:

We have a very sad Wireless body in the S&P Museum that we may be interested in trading away. It was cut down into a pick-up body by some horrid fiend and the sides are now only two to three feet high. It might give you a start point. You can send me a PM if you're interested in discussing a swap.

Now, judging by the responses from the other forum members, it seems the 15-cwt only came as a Wireless Van variant (as pictured below)? :

Hanno:

The information that I have available to me indicates the following:

The standard GS box was the welded 2C1 type; this vehicle has the bolted 2J1 type of box, and "represents one of the more sophisticated adaptations of the 15 cwt body. Wireless equipment is the Cdn No 19 set. A 300 amp chorehorse was mounted on left running board of cab".

Further to the above, in Gregg's "Canada's Fighting Vehicles", p.54, is a picture of a Chev 15 cwt, Fitted for Wireless. The cover of the chorehorse is removed and one can see an antenna mast poking up from the cargo box area.

So, that's the reference material that I'm looking for...since it's highly unlikely that I'll ever obtain a Sigs Van in the same restored shape as the truck itself.

You're talking about an FFW, not a gin palace (Sigs Van)?

Hi Hanno:

Interesting that the 'cargo' version (2J3) with wireless fittings has the same designation as the van version (2F1). They are both listed as 15441-M-Wire-1.

I stand corrected. It is a gin palace. I had the nomenclatures mixed up during a senior moment.

In any case, I'll check to see what manuals the museum has hidden in the back room. If there's an appropriate one, I'll scan it into PDF format and put it on CD for you.

I have come across a wireless 15cwt GS Chev here in Manitoba. The box was sitting off, with bits scattered around the farm yard. He was using the truck to haul fire wood, piling 8 foot wood across the frame. I asked to buy the tool box / spare tire carrrier from it, offered $400.00 dallors he sad he didn't want to sell parts from the truck. What he had that was unique to the wireless truck were the two steel lockers that mounted on top of the inside fender wells as well as the battery storage racks bolted to the insde front right corner of the box. The truck was fitted for ignition supression, I did locate the small box where the coil would of been fitted it. The truck is in an out of the way part of the province, I do plan to go that way before the snow gets to deep, I will take pictures of the wireless bits if you wish.

I was triggered to look up this thread again by a drawing of Body Design 2C3 - 15 cwt. 4x4 Wireless G.S. in Gregg's Blueprint for Victory.

Default Photo's

Gordon, what are the chances of getting really good photo's and dimensions on those FFR tool boxes, or any other parts unique to these? It would also be nice to look for holes and places where things have been cut off to make an educated guess at what when where. I know where I could measure up a wireless table for one of these. With all this info, Jon may have enough to restore his truck to an FFR. I KNOW he has a 19 set to put in it.

I will be back in the that part of the province later this year, I will try again to purchase or trade other boxes for the ones from over the fenders. Inside the GS box are still the bottom of the battery trays. I will take better pics and post them later in the year. Thanks Hanno for your help in getting these last photos posted.
