1H Sherman V DD
Donald I. Grant/Canada. Dept. of National Defence/Library and Archives Canada/PA-169302
Caption - "Tanks of the Canadian Army" This is a Sherman V DD of the 6 Cdn Armd Regt (1H). In the background is the Bretteville l'Orgueilleuse church. No date is given in the caption, but judging from the condition of the church steeple, it is probably sometime between June 8th and June 15th. The church steeple collapsed in the late afternoon on 15 Jun 44 and caused the framing in the steeple window that is visible here to be blown out. See PA-169258. Note the chalked '42'. After D-Day the remaining DD tanks of A and B Sqns were joined into a Composite Sqn. Perhaps this is tank 2 of the 4th Tp? The name "ARRY'S" seems to be outlined in white. The WD number T-147561 is repeated on the lower hull. It also has the early track skids on the suspension. Close up of the rubble on the front of the tank. Close up of the rear. There is another Sherman following. Wish Mr. Grant would have snapped a photo for each tank in the column. This tank survived the summer fighting and was returned from C Sqn 25 Cdn Armd Del Regt (Elgin R) to 2 Cdn Corps on 3 Sep 44. |
