Ford
Hi John
Believe me, I know my WW2 military utes. That's a 1941/42 Ford 12cwt ute . I owned two of the 1941 Plymouth based military utes in the early 1980's. The Ford has a distinct cab, the cab rear is a patchwork affair and it has angled panels with a flat rear panel for the window . The Plymouth has a more rounded cab rear , curved . A VMVC member has been doing a ongoing restoration of a 41 army Ford ute for 20 years !!! Will find some pics Mike Here we are: a MLU thread http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/sh...=1941+ford+ute

In the paddock
Years ago when I was living in the Southern Highlands of NSW, one of my neighbours had a paddock full of ww2 trucks, tractors, Jeeps and several of those coupe utilities still in Army green and complete but with blackberries growing over them. I can't recall what make but I do have some old pics somewhere.
I very nearly bought the two rough but complete Jeeps but my then wife squashed the idea. I had earlier bought and restored a little David Brown Cropmaster tractor with side by side seating from the family with whom I became firm friends. Much later, the two Jeeps ended up in Sydney, stripped down and for sale $$$$ I was asked to inspect them on behalf of the WW2 Jeeps Assn. I was not impressed with what had happened to them. Also, later, the owner of this paddock of treasure and I were instrumental in the purchase of Matilda Tank 'ACE' by the Lancer Museum - but that's another story. Back to the utes, I doubt they are still there and would have collapsed into the blackberrys by now if so. There just was not much interest in soft skin MVs in the 1980s If I do find the pics I will post them up Cheers Phill

Used to be one of these in a wrecking yard in Northern Victoria, Jim Benny took us out to visit the the yard early 1980s, the old chap there said the ute was used at Tocumwal airfield ,,he only wanted $50 for it , it was very restorable, almost nil rust .

yes
Yes looks to be post war 46 or 47 . I have seen a few of these around but they were normally assembled as Fords not Mercury, Unusual to see one in Canada. There was a blue Ford example driving around the Dandenongs for years.

Gippsland
This pic turned up on the Gippsland F/B page . Looks similar to a 1939 Ford army Battery Staff ute but not sure ?
"In the saddle is the local builder, the late Mr. R. J. 'Jack' Grubb. An uncle by marriage to my Aunt Lois. Sitting upon an Early 50's Matchless G80 (or similar). Unfortunately I cannot definitely identify anyone else. Probably early to mid 50's and almost definetly behind the dunes at Seaspray."

Survivor in QLD
Probably a 1970s era pic. Could be ex-mil vehicle as I see the canvas or what might be might be tonneau hooks along the body side but no top bow brackets so who knows ! I would say a 1940 Chevy 1 Tonner , 17" wheels. Doubt it is still around now. The GM-H tubs on these were somewhat flimsy and not long lasting, after weather exposure, once the wooden frame became unstable they fell apart. Don't know how this one lasted til the 1970s !

1941 Chevrolet ute
I had a look at this rare Aust. military 1941 Chev 'masonite' ute many years ago when it was in a shed at Yarra Junction.
The vehicle is now being worked on by a friend. These Aust. car based soft top utes have some similarity to the German Umbau vehicles that were featured in a Wheels & Tracks magazine.

Ford in the Philippines
Appears that at least one Australian 1941/42 Ford ute was shipped to the Philippines with the U.S. army, not surprising as the US forces in Aust. were issued with locally produced vehicles. This Ford, somehow it was not returned to Australian ownership and it was taken North when the US army moved Northwards. The drivers door marking reads: US ARMY
ITEM: ORIGINAL VINTAGE PHOTO AGE: 1940s SIZE: 4" x 5" DESCRIPTION: Military Man with Truck, Occupied Philippines
