How many miles per gallon do those carts do ? The Hay pic: would have been the POW internment camp there I would imagine. Years ago the MV club here went on a trip to look over the Murchison WW2 POW camp in central Victoria ...it was interesting seeing the remains of it all hidden away in the bush ... Odd sights, like the elaborate stone memorial built by German POWs , looking strange sitting by itself in a lonely paddock . And the fancy entrance gates looking totally out of place in a isolated bush setting .We had a tour laid on by a local club member , the Cooler is still there , where they locked up the ' bad boys '. The Kormoran survivors were interned there too and and least one returned to live in the district after the war . Apart from the cooler , there was only one original building still intact ,complete with barbed wire surounds . We had contemporary pics to compare it all . Examples of the large old gum trees were still standing and we matched the scenes from the WW2 photos as if it was 1942 again, the trees matched up perfectly . Eerie feeling overall. Mike

This is the stone memorial we saw back in 1981 . This WW2 pic from AWM.
The cross had been removed and there was no evidence of the fence , it would still be there today . The land is privately owned and unfortunately vandals have got in over the years and destroyed or defaced other stonework built by the POW's. We looked at an Italian POW stone memorial that had recently been damaged by some moron . The dates had us confused until I pointed out that the FASCIST REGIME in Italy had their own calender beginning with year 1 , in the 1920's .There were intact concrete pillboxes still ready for use , the prisoners garden beds and roadways were still evident too. The location is a few miles of the main Hwy at Murchison. 028554 Physical description: Black & white Summary: MURCHISON, AUSTRALIA. 1943-01. A MEMORIAL TO FALLEN COMRADES ERECTED BY GERMAN PRISONERS OF WAR INTERNED IN THE CAMPS CONTROLLED BY NO. 13 PRISONER OF WAR GROUP.

Aust. Indian Pattern Ambulance
here is an oddball Chevrolet Indian Pattern Ambulance. Oddball in the fact that it is built on a Long Wheelbase Chassis rather then the SWB chassis normally used.

What can anyone tell me about this ambulance in Polish service in the UK, it is built around a 30cwt Ford and the radiator looks to be the early civilian pattern 7V type

I must have missed this post, so some picture of WD Austin K2Y ambulance (1941). Ex 2AACC. (NSW). Came via Middle est. (lots of bullet holes),Arriving Australia April/May 1942. Guess work starts here. WD no. A1207004, to Australia Issued AMF no. A1207004, changed to AMF no. 1207004, should then of being issued with one or two AMF numbers, But this did not appear to have happened. most likely went to Queensland, see film AWM F01986. these Ambulances kept the altered WD numbers and are not listed in the AWM ARN files. Coming back to NSW. of course it may have never left. The windscreen was reversed, as happened to about 8 others, and a driver's side head light added, as the mounting had been sawn off in the ME, the headlight being bottom mounting was fitted buy drilling though the radiator mounting bracket, thus the headlight fitted about 1 inch higher on the driver's side. the pictures are of A1207004(1207004)not all up loaded mmm |

just some pictures, and some Austin K2Y ARN. info. some as WD nos.at this time. 1205173?/1205774,120592x,1206048,1206062,1206102,1206102, 1206104,1206xxx,1206175,1206177,1206184,1206653,A1 207000, 1207004,1207007,1207012,1208402,(1AACC,2AACC) AUSTIN 1,AUSTIN 2,(3AACC) ARN 52019-52051(May 1942-on), 76125-76145(April 1942-May 1942), (2AACC) Not all covered. I suspect that about 70 arrived in Australia, which would be equal to one unit. most likely with the 2/3rd AFA, on the stepsister convoy.but a guess. I think the ambulance plane is a DH84 Dragon, not a DH89 Dragon Rapide. Built in Jan 43 and sold off in 1946 for £50....
Interesting to see above the No2 Mk 1/L ambulance body mounted on the back of a Bedford WL chassis cab- or even flatbed. The painted over headboard suggests an impressed vehicle. Very much a lash up reeking of panic, but there is a picture in the Beaulieu archives of a row of these so a batch must have been made.
