That's all part of the fun. I came across this pic in the New Zealand Alexander Turnbull library titled "Fort Buckley, 1885". No description of where it is, but the background is distinctly Wellington Harbour with Soames Island in the distance.

My Brother-In-Law is something of a Wellington history buff, and didn't know of any existing emplacement like this. There is a large WW2 site at Wright's Hill being restored, but nothing much left earlier than that.
He does however work in the Archives of LINZ (NZ Govt's mapping, survey and land title body) and was able to turn up this old land title plan: |

Armed with a GPS, hedge clippers and secateurs, we tried to find the site of the emplacement. After cutting our way through scrub and Blackberry, we found the Fort largely complete and in a good state.

Although the site is previously known to the occaisional graffiti artist, it is relatively undamaged. One thing which caught my eye is this mount for a "Fighting Lantern". Does anyone know what this is? I presume it is something similar to a Miner's lamp where no naked flame can come into contact with Gunpowder.

If anyone is interested in purchasing the land this Fort is on (It would be an outstanding location for a house), it is on land that is now owned by the railway (no longer a reserve), which incidentally is run by an Australian company. There is still a lot of nooks and tunnels left to be explored.

Barrett Battery
I visited Barrett Battery in Prince Rupert BC in 2003. Here is a pic and a link to some I've posted.
http://photoshare.shaw.ca/view.php?V...7uFxLZE&mesg=1 I've also posted a link to a related website. http://www.geocities.com/naforts/bc.html Barrett Point Battery (1939 - 1945), Three 6-inch MK12 guns on MK7 mounts were temporarily emplaced here until 1944, when three 6-inch MK24 guns, two on MK6 mounts and one on a MK5 mount, were emplaced. A 6-pounder Hotchkiss gun was also here, as well as two 40mm Bofors AA guns and two searchlight positions. The observation post, plotting room, and magazines still exist, but overgrown with vegetation. The ruins of the fire-command post still exist. |
