The worst war movie that I saw was the Italian made “El Alamein”. Picture the poor heroic Italian troops caught between the mean British on one side and the evil Germans on the other. Or was that the evil British and the mean Germans?
I agree with you about the Battle of the Bulge. |

THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE could be edited into about 20 minutes of good footage. after that...
TOBRUK is another awful one, you know, the one where the German Jews pretend they're Jerries to blow up the guns. Was that the same one where they blew up the fuel dump? Both used a lot of the same footage, and both were equally as idiotic.

WW2 movies
Good thread ...
GWB - Tobruk ? Which movie ( of which scenes from both frighten me ... ) ? ... the Rock Hudson / Nigel Greene one or the Richard Burton / Wolfgang Priess one ? How about Brando in the old black & white film, " Young Lions " ? Man , that german accent he improvised gives me the same headache as chalk screeching across a chalkboard ... Cheers . |

The Rock Hudson abomination. Richard Burton couldn't make anything as bad.

It Is possible...
Quote:
I believe the Richard Burton "Tobruk" movie was called "Raid on Rommel". I seem to recall alot of American deuce-and-a-halfs and halftracks in German markings. It's easy to confuse it with the Rock Hudson film since much of the same "climactic Battle" footage was used. When I was six or seven I used to think it was pretty cool though.... A movie I find pretty hard to watch nowadays - and this may be blasphemy - is "The Devil's Brigade". Peter Nenadovich |

'Raid on Rommel' was a different flick... I just saw Richard Burton's original 'Tobruk' in black & white on the weekend. I think it was made in 1953.
BTW, I actually liked 'The Devil's Brigade'... flakey, yes, but better than some others of that era.

Now That's Blasphemy!
Quote:
That movie is called "Paths of Glory", directed by Stanley Kubrick. I thought they did a fairly good job of recreating the battlefield. The story itself was decent, I thought - doesn't the French High Command want to "stiffen the resolve" of the troops after a failed attack so decides to execute a trio of men for cowardice? Kirk Douglas is the officer who defends them at the court martial. |

that was the one... the problam i had with that movie was that all the actors played cookie cutter roles. and it was just a little overacted. now if we could get the battle of the buldge actors with the paths of glory prop guys we might have a great movie

Ah yes Gentlemen But !!
If you want the BEST movie, full of CMP"s,carriers, period uniforms, weapons, old landing craft, fairly good effects and Canadian know-how,we can't beat "Dieppe".This movie and Gallipoli, somewhat historically true to character.
