Serial is quite visible.
Last auction I was at with Iltis and trailers, the trailers were selling for more than the Iltis.

Default Serial number

Hi Rob, didn’t the federal government start branding some of the sale vehicles serial numbers so that they couldn’t be registered? Something about the vehicles not conforming to federal safety standards.

The early, early releases were sold as "ranch use only", but that was dropped. The Iltis does fall short on a few basic requirements for a highway vehicle, but it falls on the provinces and their inspectors to catch it. Absent are side markers, technically the existing taillights are not SAE rated, and the screens over the headlights are not allowed in most provinces. And unless the inspector knows his Iltis, he will usually be alarmed by the up to .090" (allowable) play in the balljoints. There are likley some other shortcomings on these vehicles vs highway standards. They did not get the Cdn certification stickers like most civilian vehicles of the era.
Not sure if they were actually branded, but rather sold without a TOD. In most provinces, you can walk in with the bill of sale from the federal government and register it. But if it had words like "ranch use only" the registrar may well refuse it.
In this province, I ran a couple of MLVWs that were early releases, and the registrar did not have any branding on them, however was familiar with them and indicated there were a few shortcomings that would need to be done before registering for road use.
