A question mainly for the British members of this forum
Guys,
I have been lurking in the background of this forum for some time and now thought it was time to ask a question that has been on my mind.... I have been thinking about getting a small 15 cwt British truck ( Bedford, Morris Commercial CS8 etc) to restore, but am I wasting my time looking, as I dont seem to see any offered for sale, have all the ones that are still in existance either been restored or in the process of being restored? I have looked in the usual places here in the Uk,( milweb, MVT greensheet etc) Any advice greatfully recieved thanks Mike 44 GPW Jeep 44 Bantam Trailer 43 Royal Enfield WD/CO/B Motorbike |

Have you spoken to Pete Gaine? He has a knack of unearthing Bedford MW and the like, based near Reading. I think you will find his details on Milweb dealers list, if not PM me. Richard |

Always plenty of stuff on Milweb....
I'd be reluctant to take on one of those, as I'd have no idea where to get spares for it. I know Morrises have their own little fan club but never really seen any spares for sale - certainly not NOS.
It might be worth taking on something from Milweb that is already in good condition, and just maintaining it, or if you are feeling brave my Ford SnoGo is still looking for a new home....

Agreed Morris Commmercials are not good for parts, which you have to accept if taking one on. But, by far the best is the Bedford MW which is still good for parts, with a number of people dealing in them. Also the engine can be uprated to the later version. So don't anyone be put off getting a MW. Richard |

Both Bedfords and Morris' appear for sale on MilWeb, MVT Greensheet etc. quite regularly. There's a Bedford MW on MilWeb right now which seem perfect for someone looking to restore one: Quote:

Tempting idea bringing back one of those vehicle, trouble is it would bust my bank balance.
It would be interesting to see how much they sell for. at least thank to the advice from Richard I will probably go for a Bedford MW as the spare situation seem to be better than the Morris. regards Mike |

15cwt's
Mike
I don't think our paths have crossed yet ? but perhaps you may have seen some of the OCMP at various shows in the south of England. Why not go for a CMP 15cwt 13 cab ? they do come up from time to time and parts are really not a problem for either Ford or Chev there a few of us near you in the OCMP who could give you a pointer in the right direction Regards Pete |

Hi Pete,
Our paths may of crossed at some time as I go to various vehicle shows throughout the year mostly MVT and vintage nostalgia, in fact I remember seeing a couple of nice CMP trucks at an event at the Science museum at Wroughton some years ago, was that you? also there is a guy I know from your neck of the woods that has a small CMP wireless truck, I think he lives between Oxford and Buckingham somewhere, i think his family own a scrapyard. Your sugestion about a 15cwt CMP sound good, I will keep a look out and see what comes up. regards Mike |

Hanno,
Thanks for the sugestion but I think I will be looking for a vehicle that needs some work doing to it, rather than a finished truck as I dont think my finances would run to the cost, at least that way I can invest the time and spend the cash over a period of time. I will probably start seriously looking later on in the year, at least thanks to you guys I have a better idea of the sort of truck that I need to look out for. Mike |

Hi Guys,
Following on from your advice, I have just bought a 1944 Bedford 15 cwt truck, it is fitted out as a wireless truck complete with radios, aerial masts etc, has anybody got any illustrations of how this kit /masts are set up. I think the vehicle must be an original as it has a pto generator on the drivers side step and does not looked to be messed with, the only puzzle is inside the engine compartment there is some RAF blue coming through from under the army paint. Any help /advice gratfully recieved regards Mike |
