Key Responsibilities of the Post The post holder will assist the curator and take an active role in all aspects of collection management. Primarily the post holder will be responsible for the Supporting Collections, ( that is, items other than tanks or vehicle parts or the Archives) which includes collections of medals, uniforms, equipment, trophies, works of art, memorabilia, models, inert ammunition, etc. This will include recording and inputting data, maintaining documentation systems, the safe storage and care of the collections, the preparation of items for display, the management of the Curatorial Assistant, the supervision of volunteers and assistance with museum interpretive activities.. Summary of Tasks • Assist with the major sort and assessment of the ‘supporting’ collections (i.e. not vehicles) • Help implement and maintain preventative conservation measures • Assist in the maintenance of documentation systems. • Act as Volunteer co-ordinator for ALL the Museum and directly supervise volunteers in allocated supporting collections tasks. • Assist in the prioritising of collection items for attention • Assist with museum interpretive events (i.e. talks, displays etc) • To supervise cataloguing of supporting collection items onto the TRACER database • Manage the Curatorial Assistant (and any other Museum staff when they are deputised) to assist in the above activities. General Tasks Give general assistance to the Curator. Deputise for the Curator in their absence. Assist researchers to access the collections Ensure all practical preventative conservation measures are taken and implemented Supervision and assistance in the management of volunteers (Friends of the Tank Museum, Community Service workers, volunteer soldiers) Maintain the safety of the collections, monitor environmental conditions Help with minor conservation and preparation of the collection for display. Maintain relevant documentation recording the location of the collection (IN/OUT book etc). Assist with the interpretation of the collection (tours of the Supporting Collection Stores, demonstrations, talks, helping with activities put on by the museum). Help in the gathering of information on and the cataloguing of the collection. Assist with the assessment and sorting of the minor collections to prioritise care and storage requirements. Input data onto and maintain the accuracy of the new TRACER database Line Manage Curatorial Assistant to assist in the above tasks. Carry out Duty Officer weekends (open and close the Museum and be on site approximately four weekends a year) Act as the Radiation Protection Supervisor for the Museum (Full Training Given) Required Skills: . What We Are Looking For You will have a postgraduate Museums qualification that indicates you know the ethical considerations, skills and techniques to catalogue, care for and store various collection types.* You will have had at least two years experience working in Museums.* You are self motivated and confident that you can work alone as well as working as part of the team with the Curatorial Assistant and volunteers. You will be IT literate, with good communication and organisational skills and have a flexible approach to work. You must be willing to manage a variety of tasks and to plan, implement and prioritise your workload. An interest in the subject matter is desirable but not essential. * However, we will consider applications where the appropriate experience can be proven.
