I'm going to suggest a serial number. The numbering convention for Long Branch rifles was one digit, a letter L, and four digits. When the first number got up to 9, it switched to two digits. The letter on the end of your example might be something like S for spare.

Yep, it's the serial number of a MK2 Inglis Bren, right near the end of production in the 15T series. The T was for Toronto. Not sure the significance of the S, but Terry may be correct about it being "spare". although you switched the barrels back and forth so often, and they were both matched for the particular gun.

The S might indeed stand for spare or second barrel. On current issue C6 and C9 MG's in the Canadian military the barrels are numbered/lettered to identify primary and second (or even third in some cases) barrels.

Sean: More correctly, you have a Bren Holdall, vice a Bren Bag.
PS...want to buy a de-ac Mk II Inglis with goodies to go with the holdall?
