Default 2 pdr

I have had a push on with the 2 pdr restoration and completed the carriage so I am now working on the turn table and saddle although on the 2 pdr this is all one piece.
I have had problems with the paint and its finish so not 100% happy but 'such is life ' I guess.
Pics of progress.

I managed to get a couple of days working back on the 2 pounder with no interruptions , I had the barrel and slipper blast cleaned and reassembled the two parts. I was lucky enough to get some thin primer under the barrel and inside the slipper before assembly , from past experience there normally isn't the slack to do this but it gives the hidden areas some protection against the threat of rust returning.

Hi Rob,

Looking good as usual!
Did you remember to take some measurements from the barrel? Need to reproduce one for my DAC. Thank you!

Cheers,

Ordnance is now assembled and painted ,very pleased that it all went together by hand , nice and smooth, no hammers or blocks required !
Shield is at the blasters so I am hoping to get that back in the next couple of days so I will prep and prime but will not top coat until it is ready to be fitted.

Rob.

I was reviewing this thread and took a closer look at Post 31, as the curved metal plate forward of the tyre caught my eye.

Is this part of a braking system, a mud clearing system, or something entirely different?

David

Is that a British thing Rob? The mud cleaner. You see it on No.27 limbers but not the 25 pndr gun.

Nice work Rob, I have a question which you might be able to answer the 2 pdr slipper block I have doesn't have the Middle keyed top to it like yours, I'll post two pics one of yours and one of mine, wouldn't be that mine perhaps came out a armoured vehicle rather than artillery piece?

Here is mine, as you can see the top is machined flat.

Jack,

It was a standard fitting ,there are some guns in Oz with the brackets fitted .
I'm sure Scrivo's portee gun has them fitted and also Robs in Cairns to name a few although some brackets were fitted up side down underneath the frame .Lots of preserved Guns also have them missing completely.

Regards

I think you will find its been chopped off to ease removal of the barrel.
I have some 2 pdr slippers here that came from the original source that your bits came from in Scotland and these have bands cut as well.

A few more jobs done ,the shield is now top coated and hanging up until its ready to be fitted it also gives the paint time to harden before handling it.
Also a mate has just blast cleaned the platform/saddle and managed to get everywhere which is why I asked him to do it..............Excellent job !
Quite a bit of fiddly stuff to do next fitting the pedals, linkages etc and then paint it.

I've spent another day on the 2 pdr assembling the foot pedals and firing linkage.
When I dismantled the gun I realised that the foot pedal support was badly rotten and had twisted . I rebuilt the support but had an inkling in the back of my mind that the three eyes and bushes that support the pivot bar may not line up when reassembling the parts and guess what, they didn't. It took the best part of the morning reaming the bushes out a gnats cock at a time until the pivot bar passed through all three locations and moved nice and freely.
The linkage is now assembled and working a treat ,I also fitted the new floor pan that Adrian B made for me and guess what it fitted like a glove !

Now we are getting somewhere ! have to recondition the leather seals that go around the turntable so I'll have to hit ebay to find some suitable rivets.

Wow! That's a complex little bugger, isn't it.

Any museum would be happy to have it, with the quality of your work. Bet it doesn't go out in the rain.

It is very over engineered and complex but this was the way things were done before the War. lots of funny angles , a bastard to paint.
No it wont go out in the rain ,for that matter it probably wont go anywhere !
In the process of fitting the Ring at the moment but its just shy of where it should be so the files will be out tomorrow ,I reckon it could be done by the end of the week.

Rob.

What is the purpose of the four large pins, two either flank of the lower armour? Looks like a provision for fitting additional side armour plates for crew protection, but that seems like a serious amount of overthinking.

Your correct David, they are for side armour Which you would think was a lost cause.

You tube clip of barrel fitting in three minutes.

Breech and sight assembly fitted. The Breech Ring assembly isn't the original although both 1942 dated I fitted a nicer looking BRA with a much lovely patina.
Shield going on tomorrow !

Default Just Spotted Some Period Photos

Hi Rob

You may have already found these photos but will post the link anyway. They are mixed in with other interesting WWII manufacturing photos on Facebook. Peter Ashby posted the link over on HMVF https://www.facebook.com/Radio.WW2/p...type=3&theater

The 2 pounder photos start at photo #66 https://www.facebook.com/Radio.WW2/p...type=3&theater

I'd post the photos directly but have trouble saving Facebook photos.

Cheers Phil

Todays jobs were to strip the telescope and renew and replace the dust seals.
As usual EBay was the source of some 3/16 copper rivets just right for the job !
