Marking on Ferret question
Can any one identify what "TOFOR" means? It's painted in large letters on the side of a Mk.II Ferret turret. The Ferret is in Canada but appears to be an import rather than one that saw Canadian service.
(no, it' not to indicate which vehicle is carrying the beer) |

It is not listed here so it must mean something local.. Beer would be my guess too.. http://www.fas.org/news/reference/lexicon/act.htm

Tufor
Hey Bruce,
I think you mean "TUFOR" not "TOFOR". I can't tell you what it stands for but it was probably a movie writer's creation. In 2007 I supplied a dozen or so military vehicles for a mini-series call "Zone of Separation", a drama about Canadian soldiers in Bosnia in the mid-1990's. I never got to see the final version of the film but it was filmed in Bosnia and in Hamilton, Ontario so there were problems matching the vehicles available in both countries, as well as the usual budget constraints. I always thought it may have been subtle reference to a Canadian case of 24 beer (a "two-four") but I'll try to find out the exact origin of "TUFOR". If you have seen the film, I hope they included a shot of my 1945 Superior bus on a Dodge D60(?) chassis - it was used to transport the refugees. ........... Brian |

Tufor
Hi Brian:
I bought TUFOR the other day and would like to add to her history for my files. Can you tell me anything about her? She's running OK and seems to have been well treated by the owners between you and I. I'm looking forward to warmer weather when I can get into her "drawers" so to speak! Cheers! Mike

Zone of Separation and TUFOR
Based on visiting the Zone of Separation (ZOS) website, TUFOR is 'something" Force but I haven't figured out the TU part yet.
More to follow! Mike

Tufor
Hi Robin:
I've got nothing to compare to as the last time I was in a Ferret was when you brought one out to the museum years ago! Last time I drove one was as a subaltern in 3 RCHA in the late seventies on an exercise with the Straths! It is definitely running rich and I have a chum who knows RR engines who is going to clean up the carb for me... I'll probably need a carb kit if anyone knows a source. All: I found the reference for the name TUFOR... it was coined for the movie I mentioned in an earlier post and stands for "Transitional Unification Force - TUFOR". The big challenge right now is to figure out its British Army registration number. It looks like it should be 18EA56 as it is only 16 hull numbers from Jeff Mierins' 18EA40, however, Matt Taylor, keeper of the Ferret Registry, tells me that this is not always the case as foreign sales with the middle letters 'MS' were injected into the line and skewed the consecutive numbering. The search continues! Brian: If you know the original British Army registration number I'd really appreciate learning it. Cheers! Mike
