Don, do you have spare cash to snap up the bargains if the Quebecois can't drive their toys any more?
Bob, get ready for the rush of recoveries, forget HUPs - there have to be some goodies out there waiting for us.

Default Postal?

Does the Canada Post still use rhd vans as the US Postal Service and contractors do?

Hi Brian, We have a few "local" HUPs yet to reel in...but in the spirit of fairness and cooperation, we are looking for non-HUPs for the boys. So, if you spot a Cab 11 Chev, a tipper or radio van, Bob and Grant may be interested.

As for the right-hand drive issue in QC, it will be interesting to see how this plays out. Wonder what their thoughts on center driver station vehicles is...

Any Habs fan can tell you that you are incorrect about the pronunciation of the letter "H". It is reported that the "CH" on the front of the Habs jersey stands for "Centre Hice"...

Adam..
If you are familiar with the language of the out-ports of Newfoundland, you will find the same phenomena..the silent "H" sound ...comes from the old Irish pronunciation..French and Irish are not that far apart..My wife maiden name..Dalton....family came to Canada in 1845...from Ireland..originally was from Alton, now part of the city of Bordeaux...
so "John from Alton"became John D'Alton..some time between 1066 and 1845..
Probably part of the Norman conquest invaders..cause they weren't working on any CMP's then and were bored...
But very noticeable in the Irish fisherman's speech which Some Newfoundlanders are directly descended from..
I was living there just after confederation in 1949('53-57) and it was much more noticeable then than it is today..
Just a little history from an old fart..

Default Is clear solid information about the ban available?

Now that the first round of media announcement is behind us, has anyone found a link to an official site that actually gives either text of the law (preferably in English) or a clear statement from the government about what they think they are banning (and not banning)?

That's what I get from reading the story - it seems like an exception could be made for CMP's/antique vehicles - but with Quebec bureaucracy, who knows?

Yes, postal vans are RHD - and I know a letter carrier who had an accident in one because of a blind spot for oncoming traffic from the left when he pulled out from an angled side street. Oh well.

I recently met a guy here in Manitoba who is driving a RHD Toyotal Hilux SUV he got from Japan, doesn't even have a warning placard on the back; I haven't heard of the Dippers planning a crackdown here, but it is the sort of thing they would do.

Default In Ontario

The law in Ontario is that RH drive vehicles must have a "Caution Right Hand Drive" sign on the back. The RH drive postal delivery vans may be exempt because Canada Post is a federally chartered corporation, but I doubt it because all their equipment should be legal for the jurisdiction they operate it in. The other glaring violation of the law is all the ex-British double-decker buses that drive tourists around Niagara Falls. They are well and truly RH drive and have no signs on the back.

I think that running a CMP without signage on the back (in Ontario) would not get you in much trouble unless there was an accident. Then, despite the accident having nothing to do with which side the steering wheel was on or the existence of a sign, the insurance company would withhold coverage.

Watching the reactions of bored kids looking out of the back window of Dad's car was interesting when driving RHD Landrovers out of Suffield back in the 70s when we brits first went there. Later they banned driving them on the roads.
