The reason the right side is asbestos lined is to protect the radio operator from the heat. The left side of the vehicle is purely storeage, and the heat is not an issue.

All this is, of course, theoretical. Most photos show the back stripped out and as many guys in there as you can fit, with things like the tool locker stowed on the front hull.

It does get quite hot back there, even with the asbestos. All those mighty Ford ponies contained therin produce a lot of BTUs.
