Could it be two different wreckers from the same company...??I can't see the smaller picture well enough for comparison..Nice pictures ..
I've had a good look at Woolfendens group of photos and the two Chevs have different rego numbers. One has 748LV and the other 644LV so I guess that they are different trucks.

Having said that, it might not be the case, as it seems that Wooldfendens weren't shy in swaping their number plates around. 644LV is seen on at least 3 different trucks. The Chev in question, an International and an Autocar.

Great photos though.

Regards Rick.

Hi Rick,
You can ignore those plates, 748LV and 644LV, they are General Trade Plates and were used by vehicle traders and garages to use vehicles that were currently unregistered or taxed on the road for specific duties.
regards,
Richard

Well there you go. Thanks Richard. I wondered if that was the case. They must have had a few trade plates as there are others with strange plates on them as well.

Default Fordson?

Which pic?

One of the earlier pics (and a good example of in the background) is this one:

Note the Chevrolet panel van, looks like a 6 seat utility.

I was eyeing up that Chev as well and was not sure if it was a 6 seat utility or one of the elusive Chev. Recon wagons like my model below.

Looks like an Australian all-steel with wood floor Base Body, probably configureed as a GS. They were built mainly by GMH at Woodville, SA.

Cliff, here is one of your photos I copied years ago. Is this the one you used to build your model?

That is one of them but the hardest one to find was of the rear. I knew how the rear opened but could not find a photo of it until after I had done the model. Then it was a chance photo of one sitting in front of a workshop from the AWM that showed the rear.

This is the photo below with the Chev Heavy Recon Wagon at the right hand side.

It is a GMH steel floor rigid side GS body. It should belong on a later (cab 13) C60L. Thats just the the way it came when I dragged it out of the middle of a privet scrub on the northern tablelands.

Looking for information on Operation Dragoon, I googled across the same picture. This version has slightly better respolution, but still difficult to tell what type of CMP: Ford?
Crossley in front of course, behind the CMP are what? Bedford MW with "E" type Signals body and/or Commer Q2 RTV?

How many of those Matadors and Federal/Trailmobiles were converted? I think those cargo boxes simply came from wrecked CMP 15-cwt trucks, or were left-overs from rebuild programmes.

H.
Looks like at least three , see pic of three Matador Hyster cranes being made with 2nd hand CMP 15cwt bodies -

Thanks Les,

It's a bit small but in the background I can see rare soft-topped 3-tonners, and on the right an Indian Pattern 15-cwt GS truck, which leads me to believe this picture was taken in the South East Asian theatre of war?

Default Great find Mark

This one with the cab 12 portees is interesting as pictures of these seem to be fairly rare. I remember Bart Vanderveen covered them in W&T.

Thanks Luke and Mark for the confirmation. Thought it may have been a Loyd, but did not realise they were so open right at the back end.

Yes, they're woefully under-represented in public collections, especially when you consider the role their crews played in North Africa. I'm pretty sure there was even a VC earned on a cab 12 portee (British from memory).

Somewhere amongst all my saved images I have some lesser known pics of cab 12 portees, which I shall dig up and post in due course. Not being strictly "in the background" I shall post them on Keith's cab 11/12 thread, which seems to have fallen into disuse of late (hint, hint!)

Meanwhile, speaking of rarities....you'd be hard pressed to find a more unusual CMP image than pic 1 below - a RAAF C60X aircraft refueller attending a Tachikawa KI-54 "Hickory" full of Japanese officers! (is it just me, or do I detect some hostility from the troops in pic 3....?)

The last pic at least looks like the Jap surrender at Borneo, from another angle see:
