UC brake springs
the springs (2ea) holding my brake pads in place need replacing, any ideas?

I'm in need of a couple as well. I was considering going in to Winnipeg and getting enough made up to do 4 carriers. The real cost is for the first one of each type, the rest are relatively cheap. I figure I could recoup some of my costs having extras made.
In the past, I've just matched up the springs with anything close from the brake shops. Trick is, you can't tell the spring makers that they are brake springs or they won't make them. Seems like it's getting to be difficult to get shoes relined as well, I'll have to be heading in to Winnipeg in search of this service, as no one in this area does it anymore, and can't/won't even send them out for relining. |

If one of you fellas had a sample to loan, I am positive that I can have them made quite inexpensively. A friend of mine works for a custom spring maker and enjoys a nice gov't project at work once in a while...

Another interested member got a hold of me and wants a couple of sets of these. In his email he only refferred to the spring CGB371B. I checked the parts manual and it refers to two types of springs, with the GB 371 spring being superceded by the CGB 371-B. Problem is, I have both types on mine, and am not sure which one to make up. I'd hate to get 100 springs made and find they are too long.
What amount of coils are on the springs you guys have? On my short springs, there are 38 coils and the hooks both point the same way. On the longer spring, there are 41 coils, and the hooks are in opposite directions. The 41 coil spring is 7-1/8" long, while the 38 coil spring is 6-1/2" long. I'm leaning towards getting the longer spring made up. I had one of each break, and one of each survive, so I don't know if it makes much difference survival wise. Chris Your offer sounds good with the exception that too often the favour type deal drags out too long. I can have them into Winnipeg and the whole order made up in a couple of days. And since I will likely only have the one spring type made up (371-B) my setup costs are now cut in half. Also, if anyone else is interested in some of these, let me know. 100 springs would be enough for 25 carriers, this would likely cover the current and near future needs. |

mine are 6 1/2 in with 38 coils, with the hooks pointing away from each other. if you are making them and they dont cost too much i will take 3 carriers worth.
does anyont know if they might be standard ford springs???

That part number indicates a British carrier part number, and they are certainly too short for a 15cwt.
Yours will be a third variety; short 38 coil with the hooks going opposite. I'll have to test my good ones this week and see which go on easiest, and the relative tension difference between a short and a long spring. While the extra pull of the shorter one may be better for mud and snow operations, it really isn't relevant to most of out use. Any others out there got some handy to check? |

springs
I bought heavy truck springs, they are the right length and have swivelling hooks on them so they can orient in any direction. Spring tension seems to be the same. Spring places generally have a little tester for spring strength. If you want I can post picks of the springs on the weekend.

I've shipped the sample in to Wpg today, and should have a call from them in a day or two for the price. I'm going to go with the short spring, hooks opposite, although the sample I sent has the hooks the same direction.
I'm checking the difference between quantity 50 and 100 so we'll see how it goes. I've had this same company make me the return spring for stens, and they do a good job. Found a guy in Brandon after all who relines brake shoes. Had the choice between standard bonded fibreglass based linings or a woven type (at twice the price). I guess I'll stick with the standard. Good tip Sean, but I suspect that the shops in the great white north are a lot more resourceful at making things fit; here they usually can't be bothered. What was the price on the truck springs, just for reference? |

They are supposed to be a very common truck spring so easy to replace in the future. As for price I got them quite a while ago so I don't remember. THough I may have the bill in the box with the old springs in it. I needed two springs because 2 were broken also. They couldn't have been too much or I would not have got them. To guess , 10 bucks a piece and likely 5 bucks a piece down south. Sean

It's still in progress. Unfortunately, I caught the company on their year end inventory, so I'm expecting the quote anytime now. I gave them the short spring and I straightened the hook out to where it belonged; opposite direction to the other end. I think that it may have been twisted when the shoes were removed. I'll let everyone know as soon as I know. Once I have the quote, they usually make them up pretty quick. In the meantime, I have been busy freeing up some of the sticky/siezed track links. I was outside for 3 hours swinging the hammer, and still have 20 + links to finish yet just for my left track. But I sure am looking forward to installing the track once the brake job is finished. |

ok i have a solid quote
its $7.00 ea for 100 with about 20 days to get them back to everyone once ordered. i dont need 100 so the only way i could do this run is if everyone who needs them came in on them with me. otherwise i will have to strip my other carrier for spairs. let everyone know that has a carrier and maybe we can swing it. thanks dave

Well I too have the quote. $5.50 each. (Cdn $) Only problem on mine is the turnaround time; they are booked solid and he is talking 30 days.
Dave, what do you want to do? I don't think we need 200 of these floating around; you or I will be sitting on them for a while. I can ask the guy to try and rush them just a bit. |

After talking with Dave we agreed I'll place the order. I'm keeping track of those who have requested springs, and if the quantity of 100 proves too little, I'll up the order. That would actually reduce the cost somewhat, but we'll have to see.
One of my concerns with having the springs come out of the US as Christmas nears is that customs seems to get about 2 months behind clearing parcels through, and the springs will be no good to me come January. I'll need a snowblower just to see my carrier, besides to work on it. I'll post again once the order is shipped. |

homemade springs, It's do-able!
Since there may be many more spare CMP springs laying around.... Why don't you try a trick that an old timer machinist showed me one time,
Take a CMP spring...(you say its the right diameter but to long) aneal it by heating it cherry red, now that it is "un"hardened cut it back to the size of a carrier spring plus two coils and bend it to work in a carrier. then heat it up again and quench it in oil, tada! one tempered carrier spring... maybe you'd want to just reshape them then take them to any heat treaters and have them do their magic to make them springy again. Allied heat treaters in toronto would do a dandy job of that. Look them up. Rob Groves |

rob, yea but at $5.00 ea thats hard to beat, and this way we all support each other. that way Mr love gets to be the hero, we all get the corect part and another member can take on the next project. that way we start to have a steady supply of corect parts and help each other out.
