Default Carrier Carb

Hello to you all,

Can anyone identify this carburettor that’s fitted to my Mk1* Carrier? I don’t think it’s an original as it has ‘Ford USA’ on it and no sign of a governor.

Thanks

Tom

hello Tom,

it is a "normal" type 94 Ford carburator. It is the same type used as on Ford CMP trucks. This one is not a real truck one because the top were you put your aircleaner on is a little bit different. but it will do the job

gr Rob

Thank you Rob & Rob,

I will leave it as is then, it works which is the main thing. Good to know that there kits available for it as well as I think the injection pump may be failing as the engine tends to falter if the throttle is opened wide quickly.

Mac's has all the parts for these, including just the piston as well as minor rebuild kits.

I am running a truck carb on mine currently. It was not a problem adapting the carrier air cleaner tubing to the carb. I do have the original carrier carb, but as the old saying goes, if it aint broke, don't fix it.

Thanks Dave, I'll add those images to my reference file. Do people with original carbs find that the governor interferes with driving? Another Carrier owner on the forum says his used to limit turning ability until he adjusted it.

Robert
If Alberta is at all like Manitoba, the snow is gone. I was actually out today in the field looking to see if the crocus were up yet and am considering if it's too early to put the HMMWV back on the road.

If you put the original carb on a 95 HP engine , then you will get problems with a too thin fuel mixture. This is easy to solve by putting in the jets from a GMC CCKW zenith carb , then you have a match again with with the cubic inches from the 95hp engine .

Thanks Maurice.

I don't think I have an original Carrier engine, as the engine number had been ground off. How do I tell if it is a 95hp engine? Was this a larger capacity than the original Carrier engine?

the earlier ones where 85 hp engines , but still with the 24 stud heads , the T16 engines where 95 Hp , but given the description 100.
Vehicle engines don`t have the treaded holes to connect the oil cooler , so a carrier engine is recognizable by these treaded holes at the back of he engine .
Later carrier engines had the 95 hp engine , but I don`t know from what date they changed.

Maurice, I wonder if your suggestion ‘later carrier engines had the 95 hp engine’ could be too broad? Perhaps you be referring to the Canadian produced Windsor carriers?

The Canadian Ford Major Assemblies catalog shows all Canadian MK-I* and MK-II* universal carriers used the 85 hp engine, identified by the “81” or “C81” in the block casting near the right hand water pump housing. It is reported by GREGG there was a brief temporary period in Canadian WWII field operations when the 95 hp engine was used as a replacement.

Note the base adapter in the images posted by SuperDave that allows the governed Zenith carb (single barrel) to fit the intake manifold. Also of note for those using other carbs is the profile of the air horn. The bayonet style will not readily adapt to the issue air cleaner elbow of the oil bath air cleaner.
