Default G Wagon or is it G Wagen...whatever I want one!

Ok who knows what out there, seems like bases are filled with rows of these suckers...what are they waiting for? Are they going to sell them on GC Surplus or are they headed to the shredder? Getting impatient here!

John,

don't you honestly have enough projects to be getting on with for the moment without a G Wagen? Nothing beats the feel of driving armour doesn't it?

The G Wagons are tempermental when broken. I have seen very little nice written about them. If you buy a wrecked one, buy 2 more so you can have plenty of spares.

I believe they will be replaced by the TAPV if and when they ever get delivered. The question then will be if the DND can afford to run armour in peacetime, or will try and maintain both fleets.

There are a few scrapped ones here in Shilo. They get written off when the door pillers get bent on a rollover, and are then held for cannibalization. By the time they leave, there is very little left, and they end up getting cut and into the scrap metal bin.

From my limited experience with them, they have a lot more electronics than a vehicle would normally have. I always prefer my military vehicles to be simple.

Default G-Class!

According to wikipedia:
Quote:
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, sometimes called G-Wagen (short for Geländewagen, "cross country vehicle"), is a mid-size four-wheel drive luxury SUV manufactured by Magna Steyr (formerly Steyr-Daimler-Puch) in Austria and sold by Mercedes-Benz. In certain markets, it has been sold under the Puch name as Puch G.
I'd like to add that in France it was built as the Peugeot P4, which was based on the G-Wagen, but fitted with a Peugeot engine and transmission.

HTH,
Hanno

The " G" is prone to rollovers because of the high center of gravity . . especially with the hatch and a C-6 mounted up there with an operator in the sling. so much so than on two bases i have worked on this year , they are not allowed off -road , only on improved roads . So much for the all-Terrain features ... But the armour is great for surviveability if you compare it to the Iltis.

All great points for sure, especially the shot to the heart from Robin about the endless amount of projects already hanging fire...just seems like such a current and identifiably Canadian machine, that you could actually drive around. Yes armour is pretty damn cool but not much of a daily driver. So does it seem likely they will end up on GC surplus one day?

I can think of no reason why they would not be released when the time comes. They are not US design, so CTAT or ITAR should not apply. Without the armour, controlled goods should not be involved (although technically a soft skin vehicle with blackout lighting is DCG controlled (ooops, looks like that is no longer the case)), the only question is if they meet North American safety, emissions, and crash standards.

Well there certainly are enough civilian ones cramming Vancouver streets, though not sure how differently they may be constructed. I sure like the ones with the C6 and the modified M113 cupola clamshells and gun shield...I have a spare M1114 hmmwv gun turret setup that I thought I could mount on one. As Rob said I am sure they will be stripped of any parts like that

I see them all the time up around Borden and had a good look at one at the air show there this summer. I have 2 Land Rover Discovery's that I would gladly trade for one, but doubt that would get me close. Anyone know what years the older ones (likely to be released first) would be? I would think DOD must have paid heavy for these, the civvy ones driving around Vancouver are into 6 figures new and they aren't that much different.

Default G Wagon

The CF lists the CFR year as 2004 although 2006 seems to be the last year that any were registered.

I remember that. There may have been more than one for sale at that time, but they were recalled and the bidding closed. The vehicles were not sold.

I remember that as well, I think the buyer was after Rob Love for some parts if I recall, prior to the deal being squashed

Yep. Before I could even tell the buyer that I had no parts he was no longer the buyer.

Default G-Wagon

sorry to tell you , they have been scraping them, and you DO NOT want the truck the CF bought, last time I checked there were more than 400 wrecks at 202 alone and we had parts from the 1st 100 that were scraped come through our shop, no end of problems, get yourself a German Border Police version 4 door, then go find yourself a 300D turbo , the 617 engine and the trans from the car and you will have a bullet proof dumb truck , you should be able to find all the outside bits to make it look like the CF truck, call me if you want to talk more on this 705-437-3757

Default G-Wagen

Not being scrapped. Presently being "re-purposed". Some will eventually be set free.

A company in the Netherlands just bought 220 G-wagens off the Dutch Army. Reportedly, they all must be dismantled for spares.... At least it may be a source with plenty of spares to choose from. Maybe even a complete one as a "kit of spares" can be arranged for export?

Hanno
