The repro front fenders are a bit different than the originals in dimension. I bought one front fender a few years ago, and found it to be 3/4" shorter in length (between the hood latch and firewall), so I decided to repair my original rather than use the new one. It would have been noticeably different than the original fender on the other side. If you go with the repro fenders, but a set, not just one, so at least both sides will be the same. I think the one I bought was MD Juan.

Default fenders

After a time, the mechanics emptied the spares bins of original sheet metal fenders. The solution was to buy commercial Jeep CJ5 (edited) fenders. They are a legitimate service replacement part. The visual ID is whether there is a flat on the wheel flare where a reflector (?) was supposed to be installed at the plant.

I purchased an M38A1 fender for quite cheap off ebay a couple years ago.I think it was around $200. As to be expected, it had a few shortcomings. I had to cut the U stiffening channel off an old fender and transfer it to the new one, and also it was a little weak around the bump that the hood latch bolted onto. I had to build that area up with a bit of weld. But in the end, once it was painted green and bolted on, it looks the part. The original fender had been bent in and out more times than the metal could handle. And I saved hundreds from not buying a MD Juan fender that probably was not going to fit anyway.

Those are the late CJ5 fenders. They had a reflector/corner lamp in that recess.I think that style started around 1966. I did see a number of those on Jeeps that came from the East. I never saw a new fender in Manitoba...they kept laying the bodyfiller on them right to the end.
