Default Sherman Tank turret types - Patton's Best for Canada

Hello all;

I'm reviewing some game related literature for a game called PATTON'S BEST - a solitaire boardgame published several years ago that put the player in command of a Sherman tank in the rip-roarin' 4th Armoured.

A variant was published for the Canadian 4th Armoured, and I've put up the 'battle listing' on my website at http://www.canadiansoldiers.com

A friend of mine has updated the Sherman tank cards in .gif format and I wanted to make the appropriate changes for Canadian Sherman III and V.

I have Guthrie's pamphlet on the Sherman but still don't have the answer to this question: which turret configurations did Canadian Shermans have in NW Europe?

The game seems to indicate Shermans with and without loaders hatches. They identify three turrets on what look the equivalent models used in Canadian service.

A) no loaders hatch
B) loaders hatch
C) loaders hatch and cupola style commanders hatch with vision blocks

I suspect the Canadians used primarily the B turret on 4th Armoured tanks from Aug 44 on, but am looking to the learned members of this list to help me out!

From a game standpoint, there will be no difference between the M4 and the M4A4 (Sherman V?), so I'm not too interested in details of hull length, Chrysler multi-bank engine etc, extended end connectors, etc.

I do have data on the VC (Firefly) so that is good to go.

Thanks in advance

Hanno can clarify, but AFAIK, the only base model of Sherman to have a loader's hatch was the Firefly (in any of its variants). Towards the end of the war, of course, when the 76mm Sherman came out and ultimately evolved into the E8 model with HVSS suspension, loaders' hatches were standard.

I repeat, Hanno can clarify, he's far more conversant with the tank's ideosyncracies than I am. He'll be on here in the morning (Dutch time)...

Well, thanks for the introduction Geoff, and to everyone else in the room: welcome to the Sherman Master Class

Michael, neither the Sherman III or V had a loader's hatch or the cupola style commanders hatch with vision blocks. Like Geoff said, these were features of the improved generation of Sherman tanks which did not come into use with Canadian units until after WW2.
The Sherman VC Firefly did have a loader's hatch, this was part of the conversion carried out to fit the 17-pdr gun.

HTH,
H.
