M38a1 1952 with 106MM gun?
Good day All,
Did Canada have 106mm guns on the 1952-53 M38A1. I was looking at buying a M38A1 out in Alberta and it had all the bolt holes for a gun jeep, mount for slave cable on the fender, the tailgate was welded closed with a replacement panel and the windscreen was altered to fit a one piece glass and had lots of bondo.Could it be American with Canadian plates? Serial number to the best of my memory is F200179 http://alberta.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehi...AdIdZ495395524

They also had the spare tire and fuel can on the sides..not on the rear as well they had no tailgate...also a steel "U" channel running up the center of the box for the single wheel on the front of the 106 mount

My first posting was Base Maintenance in Winnipeg. The older civilians related that they had just modified a batch of the 1953 M38A1s to make them into recoiless jeeps when the 1970 M38A1sCdn3s showed up already in that configuration. They didn't even get to issue some of them out when the PCC message came. Evidence of that conversion can still be found in the local military scrapyard, where the rear cutouts could be found, along with the windshield frames with the channel for the tarp removed, along with all the brackets.
Prior to the conversion, it would have been M38s with the recoiless rifle setups. I suspect the initial plan was that the M38s would be phased out, and Canada would maintain a fleet of A1s and A1Cdn2s. Last edited by rob love; 26-06-13 at 23:33. |

There are parts around to convert if back if you wanted to. The trick is to find a suitable 106mm RR...

I used to drive ( while in the CF) a 1967 dated 106 Jeep..what a pain sometimes with that 590 lbs gun on it.

All of the 106 jeeps in Manitoba were 1970/71 vintage. I recovered many of the back panels from the scrapyard for people who were trying to convert them back to normal jeeps in civilian life. Especially the windshields. Something about having a big gap in your windshield here in Manitoba does not appeal to most people.

106 jeep
Hi Craig, saw a listing for the #'s of 53 A1's that were 106 and the list was less than 20 vehicles , also one of my CF manuals show them prior to 1959, the largest number were cdn2&3 vehicles, if this vehicle is part of the original batch that would make this jeep a rare bird, guns can be had from Brent Mullins for a price,

Try importing a 106mm into Canada... even if it is cut up.
