Default WW2 Canadian Tanker Helmet

Did the Canadian tankers ever wear the American WW2 M-1938 Tanker Helmet in the war ? I see old archival photos of them wearing their black barrettes and the paratroopers type helmets . Were the M-1938 helmets issued to them when they got their Shermans ?

Hi Tony, yes they did. There are a number of pictures of Canadians wearing these helmets in Holland 1945. I am not sure if they were supplied with the tanks, as the tanks in question have the British modifications, so not directly supplied by the US.

Couple more. All Canadian Archives.

Some pics are taken during trials in the UK, others in Italy and NWE.

Default Tin Lids

To answer any other questions you may have about Canadian helmets, you might want to consider purchasing a copy of Tin Lids by Roger Lucy published by Service Publications. Tin Lids is a detailed history of the acquisition and use of steel helmets in the Canadian Army. Includes British patterns as well as Canadian development. A complete description of Infantry, Tanker, DR and Airborne patterns. Covers all Canadian useage and Canadian designs. Concludes with the modern Canadian PASGT model. It would be $22.00 well spent.
