Default "Sign" ID?

Hi

From another Forum, the question was asked as to the significance of the "sign" behind the soldier.

I had thought it might be a crate, shipping container, or even tailgate off a small vehicle. Doesn't look like a "sign".

Soldier is a Lorne Scott and this may be Holland 1945.

Any thoughts?

regards
Darrell

Darrell,

It could be my computer, but I can't see the picture. Could it be that the picture/link is only viewable for users of the other forum??

Alex

Hi

The reigning thought is that it's part of the crate for a Cooker Triplex or all the writing means:

Quote:
Number 14 on yellow disc, Bridge Classification for a vehicle.
J2, Tac sign Jig 2, the second Signals vehicle of a sub unit, (possibly line laying). (also possibly Tp SM)
JA73, two thirds of the vehicle registration.
The incomplete words below JA73 could be places they have fought through along their route to where ever it is now.
Indistinct numbers on the far right unit code.
Still not likely vehicle related; my reason for posting here on MLU.

Thanks anyway.

regards
Darrell

It's a crate lid for cooking equipment of some kind.

J2 is the Vocabulary of Army Ordnance Stores section for portable cooking equipment, JA73 is the prefix and first two digits of the stores code.

It's post-1939 equipment, as it's later than anything in this doc:

http://www.essexhmva.co.uk/education...%20Cookers.pdf

So it would be J2/JA.73nn followed by the description.

Chris.

Hi Chris

Thank you for that. Most helpful. I suspect you are correct and have told them as much over at the British and Commonwealth Badge Forum.

A Stacker, were you?

Now they are trying to nail down the location but the architecture of NW Europe eludes my interest.

Thanks again.

regards
Darrell
