Default British WW2 180 Gallon 20-cwt Bowsers restoration

Hi Guys I have just found & recovered 2 180 gallon 20cwt water bowsers before they went to the scrapman.
Can anyone help with parts to complete the restoration of 1 of them and old or modern photos.
Are there any in UK museums so that I can get photos and measurements.
Thanks Ian

If I am not mistaken I thought there was some info on hmvf about one of these as someone else saved one a year or so back and asked the very same question.

Hi Robin I have posted the 'finds' on HMVF but that was only yesterday & about 4 weeks ago when I saved the first one so there may be 2 of us with these bowsers ? if so I would like to contact the other owner.

Went to pickup some Bedford QL parts from a well known military vehicle collector in Southern England today and came away with another Pump & valves etc for the Bowser but best of all is a top cover for a Meta or Stellar Filter.
Amazing what turns up when you have a good rummage arround, the plan is to have another top cast and make the bottom sections which should be easy

Tow hitch is now finished and ready for fitting, this caused us a few problems restoring the hitch as it has no return spring but uses a friction material in sprung loaded clamps to slowup & dampen the braking action.
I was not able to replicate the curved brake lining material so in the end brass bearings were made and the front one is in 2 halfs to slow up the hitch movement under braking.

Default British vs. Canadian Water Trailers

Please note I have cleaned up this thread by separating posts into two disctinct threads: British WW2 180 Gallon 20-cwt Bowsers restoration and Canadian 180-gal 20-cwt water trailer info.

There are are differences between the British and Canadian built watrer trailers. Although the Canadian trailers were built to the British design, they did differ in respects of methods of construction and parts like brakes etc. The latter were off Ford CMPs on Canadian built ones. The difference between the Canadian 15-cwt and 20-cwt is one or two extra cross members in the chassis and 20" (instead of 16") wheels on special adapters to fit the hubs.
