Default Cam linkage cover

That cover was missing on my carrier and the only one I know of is on a parts carrier in northern Manitoba I had been salvaging parts off of to restore mine. The carrier is in a swampy area and for the life of me I worked at trying to get that cover off but had to leave it there in the hull as the bolts would not turn.I tried to chisel them off but the seat frame was in the way so had to work at removing that first which took considerable effort.Once that was removed,I tried to chisel off the bolts but they would not break so unfortunalely it was getting dark and I had a long trike ride back on a grass trail out of the swamp so I had to leave it there. The carrier was an early Mk 1 that had the spring tensioner on the front bogie which I am told was on the first 500 carriers?Correct me if I am wrong as I tend to screw up facts(Diesel Fumes!)It also had one of the early Lucas headlights on it.

Yes the cover has arrived , will try and make some next week , I think easyest way making them is by making a press for it .

Default Recovered grenade box inserts

Shaun,

I have made up some grenade inserts matched to the one recovered from your Ronson carrier, These inserts have been talked about before on this forum. I have attached a picture from an earlier thread as well as pics of the ones i had made at work. The lid insert will be replicated next and is just a piece of three layer ply. On your original there are traces of olive drab paint so suspect the wooden inserts were originally same colour as the rest of the carrier.

I have three made up for you so will drop them over to you and borrow that lower engine fan cowl we talked about to copy, so let us know when you will be there.

I can put up some dimensions if anyones interested, but they are already on here in a thread if you serch 'grenade box'.

kev.

time for a quick up date i think, here are some fairly recent photos. all the Steel for repairing the hull and armour is being cut this week. So im on cleaning some of the components, some of which are coming up like new. the preservation through being upside down is fantastic.

Corr Shaun she is a lot worse than i thought amazing what the grit blaster can reveal.

as you know i have patterns etc for the bulkhead if needed.. i reckon what you have left would patch up nicely though.

keep up the good work dude

yeah just a bit of patching to do on the hull, i having a new top half made for the bulkhead, and a whole new driver side top armour and of course new track guards. All should be ready by the end of next week. i have the angle iron and have started to cut the lengths. Mag drill coming next week as well so i can drill all the holes with ease. Then its off to the hot riveter. So by the end of April (fingers crossed) the hull should be solid and ready to start to putting the mechanicial parts back in. the engine is just about ready, i need a new top for the gearbox then that is ready to fit, the rear axle i have not touched yet. working on the controls at the moment, all of which are in super condition. im trying to get 2 days a week on it at the moment and most evenings when im home and work is not getting in the way.

cheers will do.

for your mag drill its deffo worth buying a stepped cutter you can get them off ebay cheap i got the 12 14 18mm one and it cuts through the steel like butter where as the normal drill bits i had were not lasting five minutes and they were good quality ones too.

have fun

excelent stuff mate...you have done in a number of weeks what it has taken me over a year to achieve ! I have no doubt at all that yours will be completed and painted / running before i even get paint back on my hull !!! is she going to be a 5th div carrier ?

if i may offer some very humble advice to a pro......if you are using a gas mig i would turn your reg up or clean the nozzle and feed... only reason i say is the weld on the bulkhead looks like it may need ground out and re done. and folks iam not nitt picking ! the project is fantastic !!!!

I am coming to Suffolk next friday so will be seeing you soon dude

Hi Richie, i welded the bulkhead flat and what you can see is the underside where i was GAP filling. i have to take the bulkhead off and finish the repairs, clean up and drill all the holes. i had to put the top section to get a refference point .

Bring your cover alls ! If the weather is any good we will play with some toys.

Shaun, check your MLU in box,

Richard, When you come down to Suffolk any chance you will be passing through County Durham as I have a couple of carrier front idler wheels there which need bringing down.

Lynn, its a Ronson carrier, hence the hole.

Shuan, On the Ronson there were a couple of clips on the conduit just as it comes through the bulkhead to hold the choke cable to the 3/4" conduit which go's to the tail light, any chance i could borrow one when i next see you to make some out of spring steel.

My MK2 is also a Ronson carrier. I have used the Ronson tube hole in the bulkhead to feed some wireless cables. Ron

Glad to know there is another Ronson in the UK Ron. The MK 2 carrier had all the holes for fitting flame kit cut during production apart from the one in the side armour. i have not herd of a Mk2 being converted to Ronson before, they were nee]arly always Wasps hence no need for the hole in the side armour. Interesting to see the photos.

Just going back to the linkage cover uner the drivers seat my mk2 i purchased of shaun the rusty wreck with the front armour had the remains of that cover in it so they were fitted to mk2s? unlike kevins photo of the canvas covered one my one fits right up to the side of the hull over all 3 rods ? i didnt find any trace of the this bracket in the 3rd carrier i stripped that was a 1941 mk1*
will try and find a the photos at some point to add to this.

Shaun, you are doing an excellent job on that carrier, I admire anyone who can bring it back from the brink, I do hope you are going to hold on to it, i will be over next week with the rear suspension arms, will give you a call.

Kevin, thanks for the kind comments, the carrier is now about a day off being ready for riveting (so that will keep me busy on Friday and out of the way ). Here are a few current photos - what a difference 4 months make, it was laying in a hedge on the 21st December. see you next week ( i could head your way for a change may be)
