Just a little photo update of where i'm at these days. I've got most of the nasty Body Work issues fixed now. Keeping in mind this is not a thorough resto right now, but an effort to get it sound enough for a Safety Inspection so it can be moved under its own power.
The paint was/is a bit of a drama. It had to be painted in order to at least look "Safe" and complete, and I didn't have the time or facilities to source correct paint and properly paint it. In addition, there may be some more body finessing later on, so it would be a collossal waste of expensive paint to do so now. So in the mean time it gets Canadian Tire OD and Flat Black in the same overall pattern as before. I started hitting the spots that i'm done working on, doesn't look too too bad. So, i'm getting very close to starting to put it all back together. We were aiming for a top-less New Years Day drive to Tim Hortons, but that would require a small miracle in spare time.... Lastly, ive been going through all of the Drilled Holes in the Body of this thing trying to figure out what was where regarding Comms and other Bits. Thanks to Eric B and Andy H, i've got the layout for what Comms Installations were in it. That covers a ton of holes. But there are a couple more that are bugging the hell out of me. On the Pass. Side Inner Rear Fenderwell, there are 2 Holes. Every single CDN 151 I have seen has these, but i've never found out what was attached. Anyone? Last edited by Scott Bentley; 16-01-09 at 18:45. |

Turns out that these 2 offending holes were left over from a C-2299 Comms Box. Andy H from out west has been gracious enough to send me one and some other bits to help get my RT-524 Installation together. Down the road i'll look at either a second RT-524 or a 77 Set in a 2060 Tray, as all the Cabling and Switching will be ready to basically bolt it down and plug it in.
Does anyone have an SMG Mount and an Ansul Fire Extinguisher Bracket kicking around that they'd like to trade for some M-Series parts? I looked around at work, but came up empty. I have plenty of the SMG brackets out in the shed. I might have the ansul bracket, but I think they have surface rust. Shoot me a PM and we can work something out. I am home for the next couple weeks before I return to my winter home. You will have to show what he two holes were for. I had noticed these holes as well on the 30 Mutts I took apart. |

Have you thought of soda washing all the painted bodies.
It is really taking off down here and you have little if any problems, and the metal finish is not impacted. just a thought regards Col

Here is a photographic update.
You have to trust me when I say that the paint does not look anything like that in the light of day. For some reason it comes out looking like plastic in flash photos. Anyway, as mentioned before, its not a complete restoration. Just getting it cleaned up and 100% complete. Enjoy... And I couldn't help showing off my $99 RT-524 ![]() |

Here is the units that I have tied together as intercom using the PA in a CB as the amp for the intercom. I'll try and find my wiring diagram and post it. I'm not sure that the unit I used has the same functions as the C-2298. I'll check with some our radio guru's. Yes the head sets do cancel out the road noise and engine, gear box noise.

Big gap in posts on here, but as you could expect, I got close to the finish and spent every last minute getting it done.
Its not restored, far from it. That will come later. But for now it is now 99% complete parts-wise, all original, Street Legal, and running well. Thanks for all of the help so far from everyone here. Does anyone know where to find a legally Deactivated SMG.
Not totally concerned if its a UK/Brit Sterling model rather than a C1 SMG. I thought it would be a nice touch along with everything else in it in case I ever take it to a show. I think i'm gonna start really kicking myself for getting rid of all my old Fighting Order and stuff. Scotty |

I'm just putting in the last few touches before I drive it to the OMVA meet in Oshawa.
Finished up the Comms install. Fired it up, everything is humming away as it should. The C-2299 Box switched back and forth between sets. All in all, i'm really happy with the Radio bits. Big thanks to Eric B for giving me a nudge to have a look into Radios. Anyway, here are some pictures of where it is today. This is not what i'd call a restoration, but rather a simple rebuild after a long period of barn life. I'd like you folks to be very critical if you see something that is out of line (aside from the paint). These were long gone before I put on a Uniform, and most were crushed, so I can only go by the photos you guys have graciously uploaded for me, as I have yet to see a properly restored one in the flesh. For what its worth, i'm shooting for the 1985 time frame. The other bits like the Cam Net, Stove and Naptha Can etc will be added before I hit the road. Here goes: |

You are missing all the rear corner reflectors (except for the spare tire plate) and your fire extinguisher is pointing the wrong way. You also need the "turn radio off before stasrting or stopping the engine" decal. The old CFAO 36-6 seatbelt decal was common as well.
I don't think I ever saw the boxes for the radios until the Iltis came out. That may have varied between units I suppose, but the ones I recall were always mounted just like you have. Nice job BTW. |

There were no holes at all in both corners for the round Reflectors. The only holes were from what I assume was the old Antenna Mount on the Driver side as you mentioned in a different post. Is it possible that it had none, or possibly some sort of a stick on like the Iltis? I know from pictures, they originally shipped with the stick on reflectors, but i've never seen any after the Cam paint. The other Stickers... I'd kill to get my hands on both of those you mentioned. They seem to be the only uniquely Canadian Stickers consistently on these things, and the MSE folks dont seem to be plastering them into vehicles like they used to. My Windshield Frame actually had one of the "Turn Radios Off....." Stickers, but it was beaten beyond taping over it and saving it. I did see a Ziebart Sticker on another MUTT, but I can live without it, as it seemed more like company advertising than driver info. Thanks for the tips. |

I have the "turn radios off" stickers. Mine are the rectangular orange ones rather than the long yellow ones used earlier in service.
The original reflectors were the 3M stick ons. There was a mod instruction to replace them with the regular screw on reflectors when stock of the stick ons ran out, but they never did run out. In fact, the same NSN for one of them was used on the Iltis if I recall, and the other one was used on some military trailer. Good news is I think I have both of those too. Of the 30 Jeeps I bought, I think only one had the screw on reflectors.....the mod was rarely done. I was going to mention the ziebart sticker, bit it was one of those things that got torn off or painted over by the drivers. There is also a decal on the roll cages (kitchen kraft or something like that) that was usually missing. I have one of those out in the shed somewhere too...I just saw it yesterday. One last decal that was on all the mutts was the US "A good driver always..." These are available in the US from various suppliers, but they were also either painted over or scratched off by the drivers. Seems like a lot of the drivers liked scratching off the "US Property" portion of the main data plate as well. Last edited by rob love; 22-05-09 at 14:51. |

Looks good. If you are unable to get the reflector stickers here, they can be bought out of the USA. There is a photo of the Radio box on a M151A2 Cdn in one of the previous photos, but it was not common to most vehicle. Most likely on Communications Squadron vehicles for the encryption system to be mounted on. Sometimes but not always a Canada flag was displayed on the front and back. I have seen both the red and white sticker as well as the Black and Green versions painted on. Rob i would be interested in buying a set of any spare CDN stickers you may have available for my M151A2. Reflector set, Seatbelt,turn of radio etc. Of course Scotty will need them first as his vehicle is already on the road. Thanks Eric

Stumbled onto this thread while also looking for info on Canadian M151A2's. Immediately recognized a picture of one I had looked at for sale in June of '03 that was in Grand-Bay Westfield, N.B. What stood out was the backyard plow rig setup on the front bumper and the same broken windshield. I had to dig out pic's from my days before digital to confirm. As I recall the guy had a bunch of manuals,parts, etc. and in the trees out back were the remains of another 151A2 cut in half. I declined at the time on purchasing as I was on the hunt for a '76 Chev 5/4. That didn't work out either. Anyhow, I thought you may like to know a bit more info on your rescued 151. (If this is a repeat of already known info, my apologies). As I looked at the CFR in your signature block I checked on it and it indeed came from Gagetown, but it wasn't a 4 ESR/22 Fd Sqn asset unfortunately. It came from 403 H.O.T. Sqn. with relatively few miles on it. Only 22,000+ miles and sold for $399. I would imagine that was the price for the scrap dealers per each unit of the day maybe? Looking at the data for other units it varies between $0 and $399; the majority being at the later price. May not be accurate though. DND records are not always 100% error free. Another of 403's M151A2's (with M100 trailer) is on display on the base's main drag. It now belongs to the museum. As for the lazy E's, CFR#'s 09800,09849,09850,09851,09852 and 09853 were the only one's listed you may find marked accordingly. There are quite a few missing from the data base if the 935 purchase figure is correct. Checking on my M-37 didn't bring up anything for me unfortunately. Again - great work. Your version is in much better shape than the one I saw that summer! Cheers. |

I also noticed that anomaly re the numbers of M151A2s. Going by CFRs there were only about 750, give or take. Yet the data summary gives the number as 935. It is hard to misplace almost 200 Jeeps, especially in a small military like Canada.
Re the sale prices of the M151A2s, I bought my 30 out of Shilo for $110 each. There was a batch of about 20+ in Winnipeg that later sold for $50 each, but I already had enough Mutts by then. In hindsight, I could have taken the tires, batteries, distributors and alternators, headlamps and guages and hauled the rest to the scrappers and still made money off them. |

hi rob.i just went out and checked the serial number of my mutt.it came out of crown assests ottawa area many years ago.serial number is 43942.it came uncut fortunately.rust free.i found a check list in it behind the drivers seat.on it had posted wainright alberta.stencilled on the windshield is rv85.the jeep is totally rust free.it has been painted desert sand.eric booth and i were talking about that.eric thoughts on it were to represent enemy forces.the paint on it was done very quickly.it shows 13000 miles and by the shape of the body i believe it to be org.would you be able to tell me the cfr number or where to look for it.i put the checklist away about 10 years ago and just cant put my finger on it yet....to me the jeep never saw ontario salt.with regards jim fraser 613 623 6156.thank you.

I no longer have access to the DND database where these numbers are listed. Scotty or some of the others here should be able to fix you up though. There were many extra jeeps held in Wainwright for use on RVs and general issue to courses or ex's. In the early 90s they were issuing some of the CJ7s for the same purpose; our Padre got one issued but we had so much fun with it he finally had to come asking for it back. |

The mileage makes good sense. It had 26062 miles on it when I picked it up from Mike. Unfortunately, the body was BER, but the Power Pack was in excellent condition along with a bunch of other stuff. I ended up using the Body from the 1 Svc Bn MUTT and carried the Power Pack and other components over to it. Thanks again for all of the information. Scotty |

hi scotty.i would appreciate that.mine does not have any cfr marked on it anywhere either.the one i sold to eric booth is still stored up here .im going to check it out to see if it has it on it,just cant remember.the third one i had is in the area so im going to check it out also.i will get eric to take some pictures.i have trouble with that downloading stuff.if you go on jeeps canada and look under jeep freeks pictures i think there is a shot with the mutt in it.it might be under jim frasers jeeps.i didnt post the pictures a friend did and i saw them there.regards jim 613 623 6156.
