testing 123
Had a chat with some radio boffins about radio sets available in 1941/42.
The first 19 sets were different from the MK 2 set I have and did not have a pull handles and the PSU didn't poke out the front as much. Other sets were about the same size and lots of other information to glaze ones eyes over. Any hey, I will use a period base with the canvas bits and a strap across the top to hold it in place so no one dies when I turn the first corner. This is a dummy construction, a wider base by fitting a document drawer that will lift the set up and back and fit with original style support frame. There is even enough room for the crew man to sit between the radio and tailgate. Included is a photo I got from Keith of the original frame support. |

update election day
Happy election day!
I got hold of a copy of Wireless for the Warrior and found an installation for a 19 set I'm happy with. The Door skins are now fitted, looking good and all the body lines are consistent. Doors all open and stay closed, used the latches off other 13 cabs. Need to de chrome the door fittings and clean up the lashing hooks before painting. Also started on the windscreens, no ones favorite job. As the norm, the bottom section was rusted so plan B is to use the brass screens I have collected over time. Original glass cleaned up perfect, no milky stains. |

Looks superb Wayne!
What paint are you contemplating? I've just bought a couple of tins of Kahki J from Flowrite - and have test painted a couple of pieces this afternoon - it looks wonderful, and all thanks to Gina's hard work... Quote:

paint my wagon
Hi Keith,
I read most of Gina's research and the scale of it is impressive. Paint colours would have to be the biggest worm can in our hobby and every one has an opinion, some are even right. I have found the further a vehicle is away from Johnny Shinnypants who writes directives, the greater the colour variation.... then next month another directive comes out. Anywho, I will scan the original door skin to get a colour I'm happy with. The camo light mud is a shade that I really like, very different to any other colour I've seen on a Military Truck. This vehicle was supposed to be finished in DBG post war but some one missed the directive and painted it gloss dark olive. Would have looked pretty cool in its day trundling along West Coast Highway. Plan B, is there a code a paint supplier in WA can use to tint up Kahki J? Fitted up the rear door lockers, used for storing the Officer's vital equipment, there is also a map holder just above the door. |

Book
At the library today, I spotted a recently published non-fiction book about a outback family during the 1930's to 40's. The front cover photo is of a Aust. heavy utility 4x2 .

I was expecting a book published in the `50s
Hi Mike and Rick
Thanks for the responses. I was surprised to see that it was publish this year, Mike when you said "I spotted a recently published non-fiction book about a outback family during the 1930's to 40's." I was expecting something written in the 1950's with a recent reprint but apparently it is entirely new, for inquiring minds here is a link to a little more on the book http://trove.nla.gov.au/work/1990883...on=NBD55842715 Now will have to see if my retired librarian wife can find me a copy in the library system. Looks like the kind of read I enjoy. Cheers Phil

Now I think, that this vehicle is the dogs dangly bits and one that I would love to renovate and own. You are doing Nice job and I have to admit that I am just a tiny bit jealous, well very actually.

been a while...
Greetings Gents,
Back doing a few more jobs, had the rear leaf springs reset as the back was too low and sitting on the helper springs. I'm finishing off the wiring using a nos harness I found a while back. Thanks to some good people in the East I got some serviceable side lights to use for the stop and tail lights, no indicators on this puppy. Sticking with the 6 volt system and generator... yeah I know but hey. Going madder still, I will use the original vacuum wipers and run steel tube and rubber pipes as was the way. I also replaced the air dam in the nose section as this had been modified too much and was not the original one anyway, for some reason they always have holes blown in them. Sprayed the interior final coat with paint sourced locally and thanks to Jim S for getting a perfect colour match from an original Chev Radio Van. Fitted my mint dash panel which was restored by the Late Bob Mosley and am very happy with it and every thing works! Still lots to do but hearing it start is not far off and my next mission. |

Thanks Keith, it's starting to look more like a truck now!
This photo is one of many I took as reference of a very complete barn find Chev 13 cab and shows the remains of the vacuum pipe heading up to the wiper motors. This truck also has the remains of the head pad above the driver's seat. I've never seen another. |

engine cover
Had a few bits blasted including the engine cover and front bumper
The front bumper is from the original kd kit supplied to Australia from Canada and marked Algoma. The engine cover is in good condition and I kept all the asbestos heat shields pieces as a pattern to replace with something a little less deadly. Has anyone been able to find those horrible split pins that hold the shields in place? They are a flat head, steel and use a copper washer. Tried several place and online with no success. |

Looking good Wayne, as for the split pins, have you looked at Bifurcated Rivets, readily available, but not sure if you can get long enough depending on the material you are replacing the asbestos with.
Rich.

Wayne what are you going to use to replace the asbestos? I need something similar to replace asbestos on my Wiles cookers.

asbestos
Hi Jack,
I have used Blue Board in the past, coated in white heat proof paint. This is James Hardie's attempt at forgiveness by producing a cellulose fibre cement based replacement to asbestos. This board is too hard for me as the original asbestos mat bent to shape along the rhs of the engine cover. I am still looking for something closer to the original and am trying some fire flue companies and racing heat shield products. Blue Board is readily available at Bunnings and other hardware stockist. |

I also need something flexible to line the inside of the boiler cover.

Jack inside the boiler cover, if it can't be seen and can't escape a heater blanket may work for you. We have one around the inbuilt heater to stop the heat going up the old chimney.

Wayne's Wonder Bus
Whilst waiting on several bits for my project, found some time today to make these small items for 'Wayne's Wonder Bus.'
These are replacement windscreen latch studs, Wayne will need to fit them to his new screen frames and cut them to length.
